Q. Can a player who has their caddie deliberately standing on an extension of their line of play behind the ball avoid the penalty by backing away?

ANSWER
No, not unless they are on the putting green.

This Rule has now been changed via a clarification released by the R&A and USGA in February 2019.

The player may back away at any place on the course to then re-take their stance and avoid a penalty.

  1. This rule was "clarified" by the USGA 2/2019 which allows this scenario without penalty. McCarthy's 2-stroke penalty initially assessed was removed. He finished this round with a 65 not a 67.
