Fitzpatrick’s Swing BROKE Golf Instruction – Everything You Thought Was Wrong is RIGHT

Matt Fitzpatrick is a Top 10 golfer in the world. Yet, his swing breaks all the rules of golf instruction. Funny enough, these are the things you need to do to play great golf. This video takes a deep look into Matt Fitzpatrick’s swing and why copying his moves gets you playing great golf.

Have you ever considered swinging the opposite of what you’ve been taught? Imagine for years that you’ve learned the wrong way to swing the club. Or, think if you’ve been wasting your time working on the wrong things…What if there was another way? A way you never considered before. Then it turned out that this way is one of the best and easiest ways to swing a golf club.

That’s what I felt after a decade of swinging with traditional golf tips. I tried every tip in the book BUT I never considered doing the opposite. My game dramatically improved when I started doing the opposite of traditional golf instruction.

  1. Hey Tom. What about height? Fitzpatrick is not a big guy. I'm 6'2" 265 lbs. I thought that taller/big guys tend to swing more STEEPLY and shorter guys tend to swing more SHALLOW.

I'm struggling with hinging too early on backswing (and instructors say it varies, but many of them seem to promote this weird drill where they hinge FIRST and THEN turn, which doesn't help me understand how to sequence that).

I tried doing the "keep the club outside of the hands turned slightly closed" thing, but when I do it, it points the TRAIL (right for me) elbow way out (flying right elbow, but EARLY, not later like Jack Nicklaus). The problem with trying the inside/low hands takeaway is that it seems to give me problems with wedges and fairway woods.

The fix I've recently made is BALL POSITION. I didn't realize that because I'm right eye dominant, the ball was way back in my stance but I thought it was middle. When I lined the club up with the lead (left) arm, it LOOKED way forward, but it was actually middle. With driver, it looked off my lead PINKY TOE, but it was right off of lead BIG TOE.

My point is that it seems that hinge, inside takeaway, low hands, AND ball position seem to be RELATED to each other. (You could also add in grip–Matt Fitzpatrick has an extremely strong grip, so like Mike Mulaska, he pushes that lead thumb up/back and cups the trail wrist WITH a bowed lead wrist)

  2. I can remember first watching your videos and thinking “boy his swing is really flat”, but Fitzpatrick is even flatter! Do not be afraid of a flat swing! It really works!

  3. I’ve been playing golf for 2 and a half years, I’m a 9 handicap and after watching your videos I broke 80 for the first time in my life. I appreciate what you do man. Thank you.

  4. I’ve had issues with opening the club face with swing on the inside. What has helped is Peter Cowins drill of opposing forces when gripping the club

  5. Agree with it all…. i taught myself my kids with the wrong concepts. All it lead to was frustration. Too many variables to control! Im doing tesla type giga casting on my golf with all this. Way less parts way more economy of movement way better to drive with lol…tx tom

  6. To make it clear to viewers, I think you should say Fitzpatrick's right hip is moving straight back a couple of inches which accounts for the right knee straightening. If my right hip moves straight back a couple of inches on the backswing and the left hip moves straight back a couple of inches on the downswing, my ballstriking is good. If I think about right knee straightening, my ballstriking isn't nearly as good. For me, the right knee slightly straightening is a byproduct of the right hip moving straight back a couple of inches.

  7. Tom, thanks for all your videos. When I swing like you are saying I get great contact, but always seem to hook my irons. This causes me to change my swing to go straight, resulting in weak shots. How can I swing in, yet go straight?? Thanks!

  8. This is spot on Tom. Not only has letting my trail leg straighten alleviated lower back issues and allowed for a bigger turn, it really helps me keep my weight centered during the back swing, making it much easier to get it moving forward during the downswing, resulting in consistent ball first contact.

  9. Hey Tom. Just a suggestion. You should use a ball tracer line to show your shot path when you're swinging. It's just a nice extra touch that you see on other golf videos. I like seeing the line that follows the ball path. I'm sure other do. I don't know how hard that would be or the software needed. But I'd love a ball path line following your shots 🙂

  10. Great video as always Tom. I’ve drastically improved my game following your instruction.

My natural ball flight is right to left, however, the only issue I face is I hit a pretty nasty old hook every now and then…🤦‍♂️

    Keep up the great content..👌

  11. STOP trying to model peoples swings after Pro's – It NEVER works. These guys arent like everyone else. He's probably manipulating his left wrist (or its locked in and doesnt move) in the down swing to get the club in to out. If your angles and arms are correct in the backswing, then base your swing off that. Straightening the leg is also horrible advice. You can get great hip rotation without locking your leg.
