DON’T Turn Your Shoulders In The Golf Swing (Do THIS Instead!)

Have you been told to a make a bigger shoulder turn in your golf swing, time and time again? What if I told you that this action, and just the thought of it could actually be detrimental to your takeaway and backswing? Every day I work with students who rotate their upper body in the pattern I’ll demonstrate in this video, and it makes the golf swing very complicated. I’ll walk your through the backswing we’d prefer see, and you’ll learn how to create a more efficient stretch and windup that will set the stage for a more dynamic, consistent, and powerful second half of your golf swing! I hope you enjoy this episode and do welcome your thoughts.

  1. I like shoulders not being at the ball somewhere outside the ball. I have tried taking my lead should and aiming at the ball. I am getting too steep

  2. Brilliant video. The advice here sets us up for a really efficient and almost automatic correct downswing. Take a bow lads.

  3. Substitute the word Turn with Rotation. External force vs Internal Rotation. If you trigger with your Lead Oblique and Trail Lat. you will Rotate on a more proper Axis. Core Driver vs Top Driven. Good Stuff

  4. My big take away is not about "not turning shoulders" but rather raising the trail side of the body to the top of the backswing. If trails side rises like that, there is no way shoulders can turn were you raise the lead side instead. Turning of shoulders or not turning is not the point. That is a result of an outcome, not an overt act in isolation to do or not do.

  5. You don't seem to discuss that thoracic spine separation thing that you used to, which seemed very useful to me and explained the left to right sidebend transitions. It seems to me that if you don't left sidebend at all then a transition to the right sidebend will leave you in that 'trapped' behind position, but with some left sidebend/thoracic shift will transition to right sidebend correctly. (Currently practising in a wet Wales in my living room with an A99 pop-up net, which must be a forerunner to your net as it has the same design).

  6. This is what I do, my hips open way too much with my shoulders and I just spin out. Great information will have to work on this!

  7. A player can easily achieve this shoulder turn without having to think about it by simply deepening the right hip as far as possible. This will provide the cause for the effect of the proper shoulder turn. It's almost if not absolutely impossible to deepen the hip without making a good shoulder turn. I'm not saying turn the hips, I'm saying "deepen" or simply moving the right butt check straight back and away from the target line. Then doing the same with the lead hip will rip you through impact.

  8. I’ll give this a go and have tried to do this before but I end up with my club going across the line at the top. Then my concentration goes back to getting the club in a better position at the top and then lose the proper should turn. It was useful of you to talk about arm position within the same video so may make the difference for me. ⛳️

  9. Hat's off to you gentlemen, BRAVO!! 👏 Great video, which I am hoping might JUST be the key to my missing consistency. Been playing 39 years (66 now) and my iron play has ALWAYS been the bane of my golf game. I've ruined MANY potential par (or very near) rounds in the past because of it. While I recently (6 mths ago) FINALLY checked that bucket list item off with an even par round 🙏😉, I almost immediately started struggling to break 90 and my handicap has since climbed 3 shots 😢. I'm thinking that my failure to routinely load my hips correctly with corresponding proper right side stretch at the top may in fact be that missing link in my consistency. Again, I can NOT thak you gentlemen enough for this video, it will likely help countless golfers!! 👏
