St Johnstone 1-3 Celtic | Post match celebrations

Brendan Rodgers turned to the bench at half-time as he replaced Yang with Mikey Johnston hoping the Ireland internationalist would provide the spark required to get back into the game.

The big chance for the equaliser came for Celtic on the 54th minute for Kyogo as Callum McGregor slipped an inch-perfect pass in behind the St Johnstone defence but Mitov raced out of his goal and kept the striker’s first-time shot out from seven yards.

Hyeongyu Oh also came on before the hour mark as Celtic pushed forward for goals, as he went up front with Kyogo playing slightly in-behind the South Korean.

On the 65th minute, Mitov had to react quickly again as Luis Palma’s cross from the left avoided everyone in the area and nearly nestled into the bottom right corner.

But then on the 67th minute the goal arrived through the skipper as he lashed the Hoops back into the game.

The goal came after Oh’s back-heel across goal had to be headed away from danger by James Brown but it fell to the onrushing McGregor and from just inside the area he smashed a first-time shot beyond Mitov and into the bottom left corner.

Kyogo must have thought he was about to give Celtic the lead on the 72nd minute when a quick free kick caught St Johnstone off guard and Palma laid it across the goal for the striker but Mitov pulled off an outstanding diving save from close range, although the offside flag was then raised.

The pressure was mounting and it finally paid as on the 79th minute, O’Riley scored a contender for goal of the season to put Celtic into the lead for the first time.

It was a goal of the highest quality as the Hoops pounced on the counter-attack, building the ball with pace from deep inside our own half, peppered with an outstanding flick from Mikey Johnston in the build-up and wonderful passing from Kyogo and Alistair Johnston.

The finish came from O’Riley and it was a bullet, smashing it with his right boot from around 25 yards with the ball soaring into the top right corner.

One minute later it was almost 3-1 as James Forrest, who had just come on to the park, ran into the penalty area from the right and sent a shot across goal which Mitov had to palm clear.

St Johnstone pushed forward in stoppage time and Jay Turner-Cooke hit the post with a header in the 92nd minute, but the Hoops drove straight up the other end catching the hosts cold to make it 3-1.

Tomoki Iwata set up the goal, winning the ball in the middle of the park and racing forward before setting up Forrest who had the composure to lash the ball past Mitov and secure a vital victory.
