Hello everyone, and welcome to Episode 3 of Tales From The Press Box.
And it’s a belter, this one. After the success of Episodes 1 & 2 with Paul Gorst and James Pearce, I thought I’d better up the ante and draft in somebody with a Champions League winners medal!
Jamie Carragher made more than 700 appearances for Liverpool as a player, but now he is just as known for his straight talking and in-depth analysis on Sky Sports, where his sharp eye, sharper tongue and his partnership with Gary Neville has made Monday Night Football an essential watch.
In this episode, Jamie discusses that transition from playing into punditry, and why looking back he can see he was always destined for a career in the media. He reveals the advice he was given when taking the plunge, the initial struggles to strike the right balance (and get to grips with the technology!) and his constant battle to stay on top of new tactical trends in the game.
He lifts the lid on a few awkward encounters he’s had with players disappointed with his criticism – including a memorable one in Australia with Daniel Sturridge – and explains how he deals with the scrutiny, and the criticism, which comes with being a well-known TV personality.
He also opens up on THAT talkSPORT phone-in with Adrian Durham, provides a fascinating insight into his weekend work routine, and reveals his all-time favourite MNF guest. I reckon you’ll be able to guess that one, to be honest!
I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed recording it. Thanks to Jamie for being so generous with his time, and thanks to the guys at The Anfield Wrap, particularly Ash, for lending their space and expertise. It’s enormously appreciated.

He talks a good game and he plays one too
🙇♂️
20 mibs in Talk sport ! Haaaa. Excellent. Its flowing. Thanks Neil and Jamie
Finished watching all now
Here's 2 guys who love their job
It's what they call, "A cracker!!". Nice one and thanks NJ 👍👍👍
Audio needs cut out when he coughs
Sad that he worships Sky so much. It's a deeply cynical organisation, and everyone who works for them has made a Faustian pact.
I only turn on the TV for games the minute the whistle goes, then off again at HT, then on again until the final whistle. I cannot stand the pantomime 'banter' that Sky stages. Pity that Carragher is so intoxicated with it.
Brilliant this 👏
Thanks great insight
Superb insight into his job at sky plus a great set up Neil look forward to the next one
Carragher is without question the most knowledgeable pundit there is when it comes to football. Could listen to him all day, and I’m a United fan.
Very good. Very polished and interesting questions. Thanks
Really enjoying these interviews. Hopefully plenty more to come 🙏👍
Thoroughly enjoyable that! Almost like 2 mates chatting. Great insights to Carra’s career. Thanks Neil. Great stuff
Carra’s had this cough for about 2 years now 😆
Good interview that.
As a Liverpool fan, I’ve heard Carragher interviewed a lot and journalists tend to tread the same ground. Thought this was a great angle for the interview; really enjoyed it.
This is a fantastic interview – great job as the interviewer. Although the noise that Jamie's cough makes at 32:11 was deeply unsettling.
Great interview lads – keep these coming!
What a great insightful interview, great to see a different approach to this interview.
Excellent! 👏🏻👏🏻
Great interview Neil, really enjoyable watch.
And the 13mins of ads for the 15mins of ht. They rush through the 1st half highlights in a min. Complete joke now
Excellent Pod, was really impressed how you both bounced off each other in the convos too.
Carra is a proper player… he has time for everyone. … not stuck up but a real scouser , nothing has gone to his head. He has never forgot we’re he has come from … not many like that today ..,
The tickets were sold out in Australia! I was there, not the best performance, but the fans didn't let the club down!
Definitely 1 of the more relaxed and informal interviews and all the better and more interesting for it. And – no notes! Completely natural unprompted questions. Great watch, sub'ing.
Brilliant interview
He's good isn't he
Best pundit by a mile and I support United
Durham is a bitter person who tries to sensationalise everything…..I hate when he is on Talksport and I tune out
