BEST OF SERIES: BEST PLAYERS DISTANCE IRONS //The gap between player’s and game-improvement irons

The player’s distance irons category is for the clubs between the player’s and the game-improvement irons. These irons are known to provide workability, distance and forgiveness.

Today, we test the best of 2023’s irons and look into the clubs that often hover the line featuring more appealing aesthetics than game-improvement but more forgiveness than a classic blade.

  1. Could the ZX5s not be in here instead of the 7s maybe?

I thought the 7s were more the Players one, with the Forged being the blades?

Just thinking out loud fellas lol

  2. Seems to me like you need a different "category" test to cover: T200, i525, ZX5, Forged Tec, 790, and the like. This is the gap between your "Players Distance" and Game Improvement.

  3. Why don’t you do this test and then bring in some older irons like the P760, and the Ping S55. We know the tour is playing a lot of older irons and it would be interesting to see some tests like that?

  4. If these are the PD irons from TM and Cobra and PXG and Srixon – then in which categories do the P790, Forged Tec, 0311P and ZX5 fit?

  5. For the PXG, I think the 0317T is more in line with the Players "Distance" category.

  6. Guys it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep everyone happy with the categorization of the irons. Let’s not worry about debating what category they are in. Hope you enjoy. 🙏🏻

  7. Looks like there is some agreement and/or confusion on what constitutes players distance in the comments. I was thinking the same. I would say you guys are testing the true “Players” distance. What do we call p790, t200, Zx5, Apex, Mp225/HMP. These are more like mid handicap players distance haha

  8. I have to say, other than in putters, Cobra has to be the most underrated golf OEM. I rarely see any guys playing Cobra stuff, yet their woods and irons compete with the best but for less money. If you buy used, you can get insane deals.

  9. king tour has been phenomenal for me. amazing feel. great shape. forgiving. and a great shape. love seeing it do so well for the boys!

  10. I understand the argument to standardize the lofts, but wouldn't the average consumer want to know how each are designed to perform and the differences between them?

  11. I did some fittings to move from my Apex Edge's (Ben Hogan not Callaway) and the JPX 923 forged were such a game changer in terms of feel + forgiveness on mis-hits. Shots that were losing 15-20 yards with my current irons with an open face and off-centre strike suddenly were retaining almost all of the distance but just being slightly off-line

  12. Good pairing of ZX7 with a higher spin ball like the BXS or Srixon Diamond, especially if you love the V sole but don’t want the knuckle ball.

  13. Ian rattling off all the irons he had in his bag. LOLOLOL. Too many iron choices to choose from ! Great comparison !
I’ll stick with my 2021 T100S (48 through 6 iron) although recently I did add a T150 5 iron. Amazing club, you can feel the extra help in the sole and in the head.

  14. This is what I’m looking for at some point next year. I currently play paradym x irons as I only started playing July 2022. But now I am striking the ball consistent, I was thinking T200/T150, P770/P790’s or apex pro but I will go for a custom fit next year. May even go to the title it’s centre at Woburn. Shame it’s not cost effective for me to come to Canada, unless club cost there is significantly cheaper than the UK to offset the cost a touch. Would be a nice holiday

  15. I’m in the market for this category of iron and I think T150 and King tour are 2 of the best. Can’t go wrong with either one these but leaning towards T150 for myself.

  16. Where would the takomo 101t fit into this test? Because I feel like it compares well to the p770 especially, and with a 28° 6 iron I think it would’ve fit well, I just have been looking for it to be compared somewhere and can’t find it really in a good comparison like you all do

  17. Just purchased the Cobra irons and hands down the best feeling irons I’ve ever had and won’t be leaving the bag anytime soon.
Great review and backed up my choice, so thank you.

  18. In both this and the players CB test, the Cobra product has looked absolutely phenomenal. Really eye opening
