Cricket was once the favored sport of Europe’s wealthy and sophisticated. A match took days to play and rewarded endurance and strategy over action and risk-taking. But when its popularity fell in the 20th century, a new country picked it up, loved it, and is now transforming it. India is a cricket-mad country that has given cricket a new shorter format, a new lucrative league, and a new life.

07:59 Sachin Tendulkar came from a middle-class family, not a wealth family.

  1. CORRECTION: at 7:59 I mistakenly describe Sachin Tendulkar as coming from a "wealthy family". Instead, he came from a middle-class family. I deeply apologize for the mistake and appreciate those who have pointed it out. Thanks again for watching.

  2. they last sentence is very hypocritical, ENglish People when use Cricket for politics is good, when some Indian or Asian or African tries and does the same, its against the rule of law and unjust. i advice you to just and equal in criticising, Anyways you guys might not like what the future might hold but damn sure, you guys wont be very happy seeing India Grow multifolds. Any sort of Cheating is Cheating, but only one side cheating is cheating and other side cheating is normal is a very hypocritical mindset which many believe in.

  3. We 1.4 billion people love this sport, that's what really matters to us. We don't want to become 'superpower'. We join every international cricket tournament and arrange tournaments in our country where every big cricket player can join. I am not a fan of Modi but modi is definitely not controlling the sport. Neither there is any sort of castism or classism involved.

  4. Whilst you are correct in saying that India have capitalised the most on the t20 format, the idea that they pioneered anything is laughable. It was domestically created by the ECB, with Pakistan creating the first franchise type league. Internationally, it was led by England, Australia and New Zealand with India being one of the last teams to join suit. Sure, India have created a monster league, comparable to American sport superpowers, in the IPL but to imagine the 2007 t20 World Cup Final (which as you've pointed out was a tournament not taken particularly seriously by those involved) as the moment that changed cricket is stretching the truth.

The reality is, cricket's popularity was waning across most markets in the early 00s, and the domestic t20 competitions introduced in South Africa, Pakistan, England and Australia all showcased to the BCCI that India were missing out on a ridiculous amount of money. By 2007, it was the preferred shorter format across pretty much the entire cricketing world apart from India (who were famously hesitant to change at the time). It's not as romantic as imagining that MS Dhoni birthed a cricketing revolution but the only reason that the IPL exists is because there was overwhelming evidence that there was an incredible amount of money to be made. It has nothing to do with India winning the trophy in 2007.

  5. I subbed after watching your first video on english premier league. Great production again and love the story you tell, even if Im not a football fan.

Would love to see anything on badminton. Keep up the great work!!

  6. Lalit Modi the former vice president of BCCI once said: in IPL India wins everyday which is why the audiences love it so much!

  7. Who is watching this after the finals? And let me remind the viewers that India might attract a lot of business to this sport, but they aren't the best.
