Bears edge Panthers, aim for #1 pick – postgame with Hoge & Jahns | #chicagobears

The Bears (somehow) won on Thursday Night Football, keeping their hopes for the number one overall pick in 2024 in sight. How do we feel about Tyson Bagent’s performance, Justin Fields not playing, the defense getting home, and what Eberflus did or didn’t have up his sleeve? Let’s get some reaction from Hoge & Jahns.

  1. I really hope we don’t play .500 ball bc that buys us more Flus. You simply can not draft another top QB prospect and hand him over to this coaching staff…you also can not keep Justin and run it back with them. Flus and Getsy HAVE to go. Hell I even think Poles needs to go but that’s not happening

  2. I am absolutely sick of Al Michaels. You get paid 15 million a year to talk about football. Stop crying you old ghoul and do your job!

  3. Not going for 2 was the right call and the example given proves it. If the Panthers hit the 59 yard field goal and the bears had missed the 2 point try then the Panthers win the game. If the Bears were up by 4 at that point the Panthers never would have made the bad decision to try the 59 yarder. At the time of the decision not to go for 2, the Panthers offense had scored nothing but field goals and there was every reason to think there was more chance to give up 2 more field goals than 1 TD. And yes there was every reason to be worried that the Bears would not score again the way Bagent had been playing.

  4. There is no reason on God's green Earth why the Bears cannot provide a good environment for Fields to flourish using: (1) just one of their 2024 top 5 picks on a non-QB (say, Alt at #5 overall); AND (2) their picks in the 3rd round, the 4th round (twice), and the fifth round; AND (3) the huge amount of cap space they'll have available; AND (4) entirely new coaches, which they should get no matter what at this point. If they can't do that, there's no hope anyway.

If you're pretty damn sure Fields is a top 5-7 QB long term, then sure, draft MHJ at #2 and Alt at #5 overall, or something like that. But if there are any significant questions left after this season about Fields — and right now there absolutely are significant questions — it's almost impossible to pass on QB with a top 2 pick this year.

Maybe they draft Maye #2 and Fields satisfies all doubts as the starter in 2024 (no reason they have to start Maye right away). Great! It was still easily the best move to draft Maye instead of MHJ. The Bears haven't had a genuinely good QB since Sid Luckman. Can't pass up opportunities like this unless you're sure you already have your franchise QB.

  5. I think JF1 can do good and get some Wins with the defense and the O-line playing good he has yet to have that consistently

  6. How good does JF1 have to play to keep Poles from drafting a QB? And when will Getsy finally run the "Shanahan" offense? Does he know what 12 and 21 personnel are?

  7. Without going into all of the nuance to the decision to kick a PAT instead of going for 2, because there is a lot of nuance to that beyond what you see on a chart, I find it interesting that your argument to go for 2 is all based on the assumption that you convert the 2 point attempt. For example, you are emphasizing the point that the FG attempt at the end of the game could've sent the game to overtime, while completely ignoring the fact that if you didn't convert the 2 point attempt, that the same FG attempt wouldn't be sending you to overtime, but giving you a loss in the game. That's kind of a thing.

  8. Apparently, not being medically cleared isn't a good enough reason to not play. These guys make no sense.

  9. I want Bears to match Fields w/MHJ, DJ, Mooney, Kmet + their deep RB room. These 4 pass targets could be the best 4 pass targets the Bears have had on 1 team EVER. The things Fields needs to learn are eminently learnable for him & there is evidence he is getter better at his weaknesses.

  10. Great point about the Bears passing up on 1st round talent to acquire a QB 7 how that failed. this is solid evidence to keep Fields + add blue chippers at premium positions like WR and LT this draft.

  11. Why worry about Fields being good somewhere else when CJ Stroud is already better than Fields. We keep whiffing. We can't keep Fields and whiff on Williams or Maye. We know Fields is deeply flawed and needs an entire system built around him to succeed.
