The OTHER rookie unicorn

Chet Holmgren is a 7-foot shot blocker who does everything on offense, and he’s racing Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama for the 2024 Rookie of the year. This detailed film breakdown & scouting report explores how the Thunder rookie big man is using his 7-foot-6 wingspan to lead their defense, while playing an integral role in their modern, position-less offense.

  1. Chet has a better feel for the game currently than Wembanyama, all of his movements are just so smooth and well thought out. Wemby still looks lost every once in awhile.

  2. Before Holmgren could play his first game the Thunder is already trending upward.
V/Wenbayama on the other hand just in his six games show flashes of offensive and defensive skills.

As a result the spurs is winning games due simply to his presence which utimately alter the way opposition team face the spurs this young season

  3. Chet is great, but I don't see him stopping Jokic in the near future. OKC needs to find another fatter talent.

  4. I'm calling it now. If chet can stay healthy, he'll be the better of the two unicorns. Chet>Wemby

  5. I think a good parallel for Chet and Wemby could potentially be Duncan and Shaq. Duncan had flashy moments but was high efficiency and a player that created regular season and playoff wins for two decades. He was a great passer, shooter, and post defender but never had to be high volume to influence winning. Shaq on the other hand was a freak athletic specimen that the Earth will never see again. His peak was insanely dominant with no effective counters to his moves. His dominance broke the game in a number of ways and influenced how the league constructed rosters and lineups. His peak was not as long and the rest of his career was inconsistent. Chet and Wemby would be lucky to come close to the dominance that those two inflicted upon the league, but I see parallels in terms of their current play styles and influence on their teams.

  6. Very nice work highlighting Chet's game so far. I really like that he blocks the ball with a purpose ( keeps it in play for a fast break ). He can be a point center too.

  7. I feel like you haven't mentioned his disadvantages in defence. In the games vs Nuggets, Joker cooked him so hard, because Chet is 100 pounds lighter than Joker. He could not defend Joker in the pain at all…

  8. his gormless look and off the court stoner demeanor makes him look a bit like a cruiser. But he is a dog, works hard both ends and wants to win, people dont put up for 7 blocks if they don't wanna win.

  9. Can't wait for his ass to be taken by a real team once he blossoms. Smh
Like Harden, Westbrook and Durant were taken
