Alan Shipnuck with Gary Williams

Alan Shipnuck joined Gary Williams to talk about his new book, “LIV and Let Die”. Alan has earned his reputation as a generational talent writing about the game and this book gives an inside look at the “Battle” for control of men’s professional golf. Alan examines and discusses the roles of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and more. Plus, what were the biggest mistakes made by Jay Monahan and what will happen to Greg Norman now. It’s an in depth look at giving a history lesson while telling a story that’s evolving in real time.

  1. Jay Monahan is the personification of the hypocracy of the PGA Tour. Wasn't it the 2023 Byron Nelson Classic, where mr. Monahan was on behalf of the PGA Tour negotiating with Raytheon (of all 'people' ?) to take over the sponsorship ? And then moaning about the 'ethics' of LIV Golf and the Saudi's ?? Ever wonder about the 'ethics' of governments in Washington DC ?!? Please . . . Don't make us puke . . It is typical for the lack of power of the PGA Tour members that they allow mr. Monahan to determine on their behalf of how the PGA Tour operates. Good luck to you. I watched the LIV Golf team championship in Miami with a lot of pleasure. Lots of innovation compared to the investment bankers who provide comment on PGA Tour events, with doubtful outcome because of luck (or unfortunate) time of play (instead of shotgun start), players (apart from investment banker commentators) playing in shorts, entertaining music, team competition (very entertaining). etc. And mr. Monahan's PGA Tour started copying LIV Golfs concept (especially prize money) in almost every single aspect. Truly pathetic . .

  2. Can someone please provide the LIV financials for 22 and 23.
What happens if the LIV decides that this is never going to may any money and shuts down LIV?

  3. Omg I get Gary is a GC guy but cmon. This guys says he doesn’t inject his opinion but this whole thing is a sprinkle of facts with a lot of opinions and assumptions about people. And I’m sure the book is the same way.

He is still pro pga tour. Btw.

He tries to appear impartial but at least at that critical point 16 months ago he was a pga tour system guy. He has done a lot of things to Piss people off (not just on both sides) but the way he came out with Phil’s details was a clear attempt to hurt LIv and Phil, and suck up to Monahan.

Funny how he talks about Phil’s comments making recruiting hard for LIv and almost killing it, because it was him that did that. And again, according to Phil whom has been right about everything, the comments were off the record. And logically why wouldn’t they be off the record?

Since then this guy has realized LIv is not going anywhere despite his best try so now he is trying to to some middle man getting as much first from both sides as possible. And whatever he cannot find he fills with anecdotal evidence.

This guy is cooked as a golf reporter imo. He has gotten some bits of info but what’s he gonna get now? Nothing.

It’s 3 spots they are competing for…not 1 or 2…which begs the question how is this guy an investigative reporter and who covers all sides of an extremely complex story, but doesn’t know this very simple public fact; which is actually extremely pertinent to this whole saga.

The fourth is Andy ogletree who won the order of merit in Asia. Btw.

Plus the LIv teams may not bring back guys in the yellow zone. So it could be up to 8 or so of the 48 that are gone for new blood. And the league looks poised to grow.

No one sold out. LIv is a business.

They will leave the selling of the teams to the teams. And the business will go up in value because LIv owns part of all the teams.

But if the pif sells something it will be Liv itself; which won’t happen anytime soon; because this little Liv thing is just starting to accumulate value, no thanks to this Shipnuck that’s for sure.

  4. So another author writes a book and wants to make money on it so he trys to make it as controversial as he can so that he sells books, then follows it up with a boring book but hopes to make lots of money on it by riding on the coat tails. Bottom line is it was and is all about the money. I think Alan just puts things in even if it stretches the truth just to sell copies, if the truth dont sell then he just embellishes.

  5. Every interview I've heard from Shipnuck has been pro LIV. Almost giddy to be there reporting. Being part of the iconic photo of Norman at the first LIV event was priceless. He's burned some bridges. If not for him, would anyone else helped us learn what a jerk FIGJAM really is? Now Phil does it all by himself.

  6. The Saudis are working hard to become more accepting or acceptible in the court of public opinion. Pursuing some sort of agreement with Israel seems to have played a part in Hamas effort to derail peace in the region. The Saudis want technology assistance, Israel can use the good will if that's even possible.

  7. If you know the Saudis the Majed letter is key . They deal thru intermediaries and only go public when deal is done . If PGAT backtrack on FA now they will double and treble down and nuke golf from orbit . This deal is going thru .
