S1E1 Pitching Command Show:Gil Patterson

The Pitching Command Show with guest Gil Patterson, Oakland Athletics Pitching Coordinator.

With everyone throwing hard nowadays, command is now the separator.
It’s no longer a choice between being either a power pitcher or a finesse pitcher today. You need to be both, velocity with command. Command is what separates pitchers from the pack today.

A great discussion about training and measuring pitching control, command, sequencing and what it takes to pitch at higher levels of baseball.

Gil Patterson has had great success as a player, and as a coach throughout the minor leagues and major league. He was drafted 4 times as a first rounder, and on the 4th time by the Yankees in 1975 out of Miami Dade Community college, and then he made it all the way to the big leagues in just 2 years.

After that, he began coaching for the Yankees, then Diamondbacks, Blue Jays, and became a pitching coordinator for both the Diamondbacks and the A’s, and a bullpen coach for the Blue Jays. As a pitching coach with the Yankees, he coached Andy Petitte, Mariano Rivera , El Duque , Roger Clemons, and many more great pitchers. As a pitching coach with the Blue Jays for 2 years he even coached Doc Halladay !

He even taught himself how to throw left handed after getting hurt !

  1. Great discussion! Met Gil on a plane and he let me know about your podcast. Glad I did. To his point, when all of us talk everybody learns. I actually had never read Dorfman. Ordered the books for my pitchers immediately after listening to your discussion 😉 – Tks, Brad in Cali
