How to Hit Bunker Shots from Wet Sand (or Hard, Compact Sand)

Learn how to hit a bunker shot when the sand is wet or otherwise compact

Bunker Shots: Compact & Wet Sand

In this video we review the modifications needed to your normal bunker shot setup and technique in order to hit from wet or compact sand.

The problem with hitting from wet sand is that it is difficult to judge whether your clubhead will dig into the sand and get stuck or skip across and hit the ball thin. This is why it is best to try to aim 1 inch behind the ball, instead of the usual 2 inches you would normally do in normal sand conditions.

In addition, you can also use an even more lofted club than your sand wedge, such as a lob wedge. Ideally, that club would have a bit less bounce, allowing the club to dig in properly.

Try to practice hitting wet sand bunker shots after a heavy rain in the practice range. Doing so will make you more confident the next time you find yourself in wet sand on the course.

  1. Would you say theirs a little more shaft lean and a more square face vs a normal bunker shot?
