OPINION: Johnny Sexton’s 3-match ban should have been LONGER!

Sexton’s ban should have been for twice as long as it is. I won’t apologise for saying so. Anyway, make sure to see the video to see why I hold this opinion!

  1. I’m sorry I just don’t agree, A player arguing with the referee team after the whistle for me is completely fine. Especially when they were inconsistent around head shots and two of his teammates were sent off with HIAs for only a yellow card while one of his teammates was red carded for the same offense.

  2. Look I’m Irish and I agree. I can’t sit there and complain about rassie etc when (although this was different) it was just as bad

  3. Respect for referees is a major concern, Many players, even captains, are rude in their conduct with referees and there is also a lot of appealing, which I dislike. Sexton and to a lesser extent Biggar are repeat offenders and rugby needs to make a stand.

Refs will make "mistakes" in peoples' eye, but we need to live with that, it is part of being a player, part of the discipline, also, do we really want every single infringement identified, because the game never flow and would simply move from set piece to set piece.

  4. I think if a player is banned for x number of games they should also be banned from training with and having contact with their team until their ban is finished.

  5. My issue with this scenario is that we don’t know what Sexton did for a fact. We saw Rassie’s tweets, we heard what Hartley said (though he claims it wasn’t towards the referee), but we did not hear what Sexton said. From what I understand, the findings from the trial have the term ‘probably’ before claiming what Sexton said – no one seems to be sure what he actually did or said. Therefore, how can people rightfully claim that Sexton should be banned for longer? I will say that I’m definitely biased as a Leinster and Ireland supporter, but I would like to think that I would share these views towards any player of any nation/club in a similar situation.

  6. I'm Irish. I agree. I'm so sick and tired of Sextons consistent childish behaviour over the years. He's always at it. Short fuse is an understatement. He doesn't help himself or seem to learn at all.

  7. Rugby referees are getting treated a little more like soccer referees. Back chat, asking for cards etc are unacceptable.

  8. This is nothing, a storm in a teacup. You're only showing disappointment that the chances of Ireland beating everyone has just increased exponentially. I've seen less match bans for an awful lot worse in my 30 years of watching rugby. I've lost respect for this channel with that whinging video. As for your comments about Sexton's health or wellbeing after he retires? That is the height of disrespect! You're not his doctor, so with all due respect, you should just stick to the sport, and refrain from personal attacks. You have diminished yourself and your channel. Btw, if you listen to Egg chasers and his take, that man is a true rugby fan who wants the best of every team to be competing.

  9. People can't compare rassie and sexton as the incidents were so different as one was a brief in private and the other was a calculated drawn out agenda undermining the referee's every decision which was only to publicly humiliate the ref's so to me that's worse plus he wasn't even a player.

  10. I agree that the judgment may have been low. What I would like to know is were there any mitigation factors considered when the judgement was made? What was Johnnys previous record like? It is easy to say there was pressure to have him at the World Cup maybe there was. A couple of extra matches would indeed underprepared him.

  11. At this point I'm hoping we can use AI assistance or something to improve refereeing, because while referees have to be respected, at this point I feel like I've seen so many matches decided by the referee making inconsistent calls throughout. As a spectator this can be very frustrating, particularly with the cost of going to games these days, so I can't imagine what that is like when you have put a year of work into getting to a final or whatever

  12. We do not abuse referees in Ireland, as we expect the full punishment for such behaviour.

  13. It sounds like you are saying Sexton should be banned for wc games in order to make an example of him. Surely the job of the epcr committee was to come up with a fair punishment based on the incident in question. Considering you generally get a 3 match ban for reckless high tackles that can leave an opponent concussed and stood down from the game for several weeks i think it would be bizarre to ban sexton for more than 3 games.

  14. Dylan Hartley called the referee a" F…. Cheat" plus he had a long history of Red and Yellow cards. Much more serious

  15. I wish the online ire directed at referees was pointed at world rugby giving the refs such a crazy, and overly long and complicated, rule book. They actually do a decent job given they often make 100s of decisions (technically) at each breakdown.

Sexton’s behaviour was mostly just embarrassing if you’re Irish and if I were Andy Farrell I’d be taking the captain’s armband off him since he can’t mediate between officials and team. I think a public stepping down and apology plus the three match ban would probably add up to enough.

  16. to think a Pau player in the Challenge Cup got banned for months for "a strong handshake" with a referee after a match against the Cheetahs but Sexton got only 3 matches with all the things he did while not even being an actor on the pitch is beyond me. It's pretty clear for me that Johnny Sexton got protected since World Rugby wanted one of his big stars at the event…that decision is pretty bad imo and if Ireland wins the World Cup that decision will be looked upon in even worse fashion.

  17. As a Wales fan, I will stand up for respectful and sportsmanlike behaviour towards all referees.

    …except Alain Rolland🤣
