To stay in the paddock for more than half a century, you simply must adore Formula 1. The sport might have changed a lot in that time, but what has always stayed the same is Herbie Blash’s enthusiasm for F1.
Now the FIA’s permanent senior advisor to the Race Director, Blash’s career began as a race mechanic at Rob Walker Racing and Lotus in the 1960’s.
30 years later, having won two World Championships as team manager of Brabham Racing in the 1980’s, Herbie switched the pit wall for Race Control – where he spent more than two decades as deputy to the late, legendary FIA Race Director Charlie Whiting.

Just a correction, Bernie didn't own Vanwalls, it was the Connaught team that he bought.
Would have liked to have explored his more recent time in World Superbikes working with Toprak. If you haven’t watched World Superbikes I’d check it if you like racing you’ll love WSB, fantastic racing far better than MotoGP imo.

As a Lotus owner it was great to hear Herbie's tales from that era onwards. He's had such an involvement in F1's evolution. I used to drive Max Mosley on occasion and, after Charlies' sudden passing, he told me of an instant when a Brabham failed out on circuit, so the stewards rushed to examine the car (suspecting it was underweight). Charlie organised a bunch of mechanics to race out and orchestrate a fight so the stewards would be distracted whilst they swapped the rear wing for a heavier version. 😂 Max said it was better to have the poacher as a gamekeeper.
Beyond the grid might be the best series of the whole formula 1 channel. It's was so fascinating to hear about his story, all of Herbies memory and experience…A man with such a long history in our beloved sport
