The Problem With Rick Shiels …

Grant Horvat recently posted a video on his channel where he played Rick Shiels Golf in an 18 hole stroke play match. In this video, I explain why I found this hard to watch.

  1. I'm sure Grant duffed and thinned a couple of chips and missed a couple of putts on purpose too…

  2. Love Rick, watch his content all the time. I think the Break 75 series has shown us that he’s at least a 5 or 6 handicapper, and I that’s totally fine. I also think he has just a little too much pride in his game, where he feels like he should be better than he is. I think if he can get to the point mentally where he’s able to accept who he is as a golfer, it would in turn solve both of the problems you mention here. He wouldn’t feel the need to play off scratch, and he wouldn’t take himself too seriously when things go bad. Also, side note, I’ve always felt that match play is such a better format for his matches than stroke play. He’s so susceptible to the blow up hole, and in stroke play, that can just end the round right there.

  3. I agree that the format wasnt right. It should have been matchplay. Rick is better than a 6 handicap but he fluctuates between some very good rounds and some seriously bad rounds.. Rick also talks too much about the shot hes going to play which just adds pressure and expectation. Rick is successful but a times he get a bit too self important

  4. love rick but agree he should have at least 5 strokes .. he doesn't play his best recently, but still .. it's f*cking rick shiels and i totally appreciate his content .. 🙂

  5. I agree Dougie, I found it hard to watch listening to Rick's negative commentary, it becomes his default "Oh Rick" and how many times have we heard it, video after video. He should change it up and be more sarcastic of himself and say "nice" as it goes into the water or thats ok. At present it seems like the video is all about Rick, as you say he should have started with a few points up his sleeve and made it a fun chase but if he bitched every hole it still wouldn't have made it any good. He needs to make a few changes here.

  6. Andy Carter is another great guy when he’s struggling! Always laughing always fun to watch . He plays Pete often , that’s very enjoyable to invest my time in . Thanks Dougie , another great report .

  7. Stopped watching after a couple of holes because it was a bit boring. Grant is a nice golfer but not interesting. Rick is a semi-decent golfer but his content is usually interesting. Both Rick and Finch get a little whiney at times and that's a turnoff, but Rick's interaction with his guests is usually superior. TBH when he does Break 75, I'm more interested in the course than the players….

  8. Of course everyone is different on their opinions and thats fine. However, i really enjoyed it. Im a massive fan of shiels and have been for years, and because of it im now a fan of Grant and a new sub. Rick is an ambassador for online golf content and has provided inspiration for many now established channels. I agree with you though that in hindsight a match play format would have yielded a closer game, but it was Grants choice as it was on his channel.

  9. It was the first video but was made in the third day ,, that’s why it was first. It’s real get over it , Rick is the best and always will be , why did Finchy does not get those views. Really don’t like your content and it’s not worth the effort , go see Nate do this properly , ridiculing the best is not sensible in your eatprly stahpges , just repeating your comments turns people off ,, sorry last view

  10. Thanks for being real and sticking your neck out with your opinions that are fake as hell. You are making comments to to stir controversy and get clicks not because you are being real.

  11. My honest thoughts on Rick are that he should have taken practice and exercise more seriously over the years. While he is a YouTuber he is also an “athlete” in some regard and the top Golfer on YT. Having two kids of my own and a much less busy work schedule than him I’m sure it is hard to make time, I understand. But he had the resources to take everything to the next level. Unrelated, It was a strange move going with that seemingly non-US Eagle brand as a sponsor over his signature Nike or something more golf related. It looks terrible. I have watched Rick since the early club review days

  12. I’d rather watch Rick struggle and show his real emotion than play it off like he doesn’t care and watch him laugh about it all.

  13. I think Rick usually plays with handicaps. He was a bit defeated going into it, knowing he would lose.

  14. I think the match was entertaining. It’s YouTube golf. If Rick allows himself to have extra strokes and wins then it’s underwhelming where as if he was able to pull it off then that would be explosive. It’s why they use the driver on drivable par 4s. It’s why they take the hero shot from the fairway bunker. The possibility of something great happening. It mostly came down to Ricks putting. If his putter was on like it had been then the match would have been very close.

  15. Rick Sheils is not a good golfer. He is a average weekend golfer in America. From the many videos in the last year I would guess he is a +8 handicap. His back swing is way too fast and he sets his wrist too early. He tries to hit draws on all his clubs which is a huge mistake. He needs to hit a straight ball flight to score. His draw is actually a hook. It’s unpredictable and does not hold a green IF he hits a green.

Hell, the Brits have butchered the English language so bad I need an interpreter to understand their constant talking. A bunker is not a “boinka”.

  16. I watched the entire video. I thought it was great. Both of them were struggling with different parts of their game! I completely disagree with your assessment of Rick.
