Dominik Szoboszlai’s Journey From Golf Balls and Tiny Footwear to Becoming Liverpool’s Fresh Hero.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s Journey From Golf Balls and Tiny Footwear to Becoming Liverpool’s Fresh Hero.

Before the season began, there was a lot of talk around Anfield about Dominik Szoboszlai needing time to adapt. At just 22 years old, he had recently joined the Premier League from RB Leipzig, and it wasn’t fair to expect greatness from the Hungarian right away. Liverpool had also invested £60 million to activate his release clause at Leipzig, and many Liverpool fans were cautiously optimistic, hoping he would have an impact similar to Ibrahima Konate rather than Naby Keita.
As events have shown, he doesn’t quite fit into either category. Instead, he reminds fans of the most iconic wearer of Liverpool’s No. 8 jersey, Steven Gerrard. To be clear, no one is saying that Szoboszlai is the new Gerrard because there can only be one Gerrard for Liverpool fans. However, the way Szoboszlai scored his sensational goal on Wednesday night at Anfield against Leicester was reminiscent of Gerrard. He unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner from outside the box within five minutes of coming on, completely changing the momentum of the game in Liverpool’s favor.
Now, Liverpool’s midfield contributes with goals, assists, and tireless running. Their defense also benefits from a reliable protective shield in front of it, a far cry from the past. Credit should also go to players like Alexis MacAllister, Endo Wataru, and Ryan Gravenberch, who have all made valuable contributions, giving Liverpool a midfield that can rival any in the Premier League.
Despite being just 22 years old, he already captains his national team and arrived at Anfield with excellent English language skills, a stark contrast to Darwin Nunez’s struggles with the language a year ago. His father, Zsolt, who played in Hungary’s lower leagues, played a pivotal role in his development. Szoboszlai considers his father his footballing hero, and Zsolt had his son dribbling around plastic bottles in their living room as a child. If he knocked one over, he had to pick it up and start over. Zsolt also had him practice with golf balls in his hands to discourage shirt-pulling and focus on footwork. He even made him wear small boots to prevent his feet from growing too large, and now Szoboszlai wears size sevens despite being 6 feet 1 inch tall.
Looking back, it seems laughable that just three months ago, his £60 million price tag seemed excessive. In a market inflated by Chelsea’s extravagant spending, that £60 million now appears to be one of the smartest investments of the summer, with Jurgen Klopp playing a significant role in his signing. Of course, Liverpool didn’t acquire Szoboszlai to make a profit; Klopp wants his Liverpool 2.0, as he calls them, to win trophies, and Szoboszlai significantly improves their chances of doing just that.
