Paul McGinley with Gary Williams

Paul McGinley was the victorious European Ryder Cup captain in 2014 and he remains a vital cog in the European Ryder Cup apparatus including being part of the five-person committee that selected Luke Donald to captain the team in 2023. As a lead analyst for Sky Sports and on “Live From” on Golf Channel, Paul had a front row seat to the event on the broadcast side while maintaining a back bench position for Team Europe in Rome. Paul only did one interview in the immediate aftermath of this year’s Ryder Cup and its with our Gary Williams. You will hear Paul’s thoughts on why Europe succeeded, will Luke return as captain, will players get compensated going forward and will LIV players return to team Europe in 2025. Plus, the secret sauce that makes the culture of the European Team what is. Enjoy this hour conversation with one of the essential voices in the game.

  1. ok, ok, ok, yall are much better than us in TEAM games! The US is always been about themselves. We much embrace this type of game!

  2. Could listen to Paul McGinley all day. Such a smart, modern, progressive thinker, open to different ideas, which sets him apart from numerous players of his generation.

  3. WHEN YOU DON'T PLAY FOR 5 WEEKS FOR A MAJOR TOURNEY….. YOU WILL LOSE…. PRETTY SIMPLE…..DON'T THINK WE HAVE ANY TOURNEY'S WITH 4 BALL, IN THE USA…..

  4. Just can't stand listening to this guy. especially after all the crap he's been talking this last year plus about LIV.

  5. I love the insight about the 2014 PGA lol. Rory definitely used to be more aggressive back in the day. He should probably go back to that to start winning majors again.

  6. Really a beautiful interview. Every American involved in the 2025 Ryder Cup would do themselves a favor listening closely to this.

  7. Americans dont have the benefit of team rivalry, tribalism or international rivalry to focus their players.

  8. For all the supposed nationalism for the US team, the average person had forgotten a few days after the event. The Europeans take the Cup far more seriously. The players on the bottom half of their team have a perpetual chip on their shoulders. Without question Rham, Rory and Hovland were better.

  9. McGinley played the European Tour and it's existence is threatened. LIV defectors while playing in America could be relied upon to support the DP Tour by playing in their events. Total purses on the PGA Tour are 3x that of the DP. Typical weekly events have $2 mil purses. Life on the PGA Tour is a charmed existence.

  10. Euros ride the mysticism, lore and images of Seve breathing fire into the event. The Americans have never had that emotional anchor to the Ryder Cup. The logical USA comparison might be Tiger and Phil but they have sucked in the Ryder Cup. The Americans simply don't have the emotional investment in the event and it's tough to fill that void. The Euros have brilliantly bottled it and uncork it every 2 years!

  11. Great interview. It would be good to resolve the issue of payments for both teams and be made public where all the money goes. There also needs to be a recognition that indirectly all the players are rewarded today for their involvement through their sponsors and brand etc.
Over the last few years Ricky Fowler has struggled on the course but he has remained positive, acted professionally and I am sure his sponsors have remained loyal to his brand. Arnold Palmer was making more at the end of life because sponsors want to be associated with this brand. There is a real danger that some players come across as being hard done to and not being rewarded (while earning vast sums) which will damage their brand and sponsors will not want to be associated with them ultimately cost them. In years to come some of the LIV players will look back on their decisions and comments made and reflect that was not in their long term interests.
Golf stands above other sports for the values it promotes and behavior it encourages. Damage that and you will never get the genie back in the bottle and we will all be poorer for it.

  12. Facts! As an American most of the memories I have of watching Ryder Cups is fist pumping by European players.
