Former Bears director of player personnel Josh Lucas goes in-depth on the team’s mindset heading into the 2017 and 2021 NFL drafts. 1. I just remember screaming at my tv when they took Trubisky over Watson or Mahomes. Dude started 1 year for a bad college team. Unacceptable and unforgivable.

  2. So we have hired people who don’t know football? Got it! That’s all you had to say smh

  3. Thank you for pressing him on the decision to draft Mitch, and the thought process behind the decision… There was nothing about Mitch that screamed #3 Overall Pick. Then to TRADE UP to #2 was absolutely insane! Ryan Pace let some randoms rumors spook him, and he promptly set the franchise back… Take Pat Mahomes out the picture, Watson was the no brainer QB choice at that time in history. Not Mitch!!

  4. 10:53 – This is what pissed me off about the Pace/Nagy era, they never had a back up plan! How on earth would you think that Andy Dalton would get through an entire season healthy with a Bottom 5 OLine? Why would you NOT have a base package for Justin ready to go just in case? If I remember correctly, Nagy barely gave him reps in the preseason, then gave him an open playbook on his FIRST GAME! They never had a Plan B, C, D with player personnel, no game plan adjustments, nothing!!

  5. Dude that question about trading up from 3 to 2 and not being okay with Mahomes was a phenomenal question.

  6. I want to thank the Bears GM for letting David Montgomery go to the Lions, from the bottom of my heart thanks. Oh and cant wait to put the smack down on the Bears.

  7. Great interview, but, coulda, shoulda, woulda………..come on, we're Chicagoans, remember, somebody passed on Michael Jordan too. You can only "guess" so much 😉

  8. This is AMAZING… the very end about Justin is 1000% true. I have gone back and watched a bunch of games…he’s not the same player anymore. He needs to find his swag FAST!

  9. The problem with these executives is they continually fail to understand the difference between a top college QB and a top pro QB. These running backs who play QBs is exciting to watch and often works well in College. Guys like Tebow, RG3, Manziel, and yes Fields. Look at some of the greatest QBs in history and how they were rated coming out of college. Guys like Brady and Montana werent big names coming out of college at all. Do you know why they excelled in the NFL and these RB playing QBs dont? Because they can read defenses, make split second decisions and put the ball on a dime when they throw. These 'option' QBs not so much. Mahomes is the best QB in football, not because he can run and scramble (he certainly can) but because he is accurate, reads defenses and makes quick decisions. Even if these type of QBs make it in the NFL, they dont win the big game. Look at Jackson. A great fantasy QB (lots of points), but even this far into his career, he is not a great passing QB. He struggles with reads, and is often inaccurate. It helps that he has a great coach and usually a top defense, because the Ravens dont tend to be in the top points scoring teams. Add to that that the Ravens have trouble getting free agent skill positions. They dont sign big name WRs (dont say OBJ) or RBs because their QB tends not to throw or hand off, he does it himself. No top name WR wants to play for a guy who sees him as a decoy.

The next time your franchise starts hyping up the latest running QB in the draft, expect several years of failure on the horizon.

  10. @670theScore Just wanted to chime in like most and say this interview is hands down one of the best ever on the Score. Instant classic. Things most fans wanted to hear and rarely do from behind the curtain.

  11. It's interesting how people who talk about this stuff all day every day can know so little compared to someone who does it for a living and is actually behind the curtain. Go figure……

  12. Pace and Poles share more than short names that start with a "P" and have an "e" at towards the end. They both blew first round QB draft picks. Trubisky over Mahomes was one of the biggest gaffs in NFL draft history. Poles took a decent value pick shot at Fields, but his bigger failure was not realizing that Fields is NOT an NFL level QB and should have drafted another QB. The only was to salvage Fields at this point is to add a couple of good RB that can pass a bit and treat the QB position as a hybrid runner who takes snaps from the center and occasionally passes the ball. Run the Veer or Triple Option. Anything, but try to have Fields try to play like a traditional NFL QB.

  13. Okay be real, you can’t say Mahomes is transcendent when he’s been on one team. You really don’t think the Bears would’ve screwed him up like they have every other QB? Mahomes sat for a year behind a good team/HC. I don’t think he would’ve had the same luxury in Chicago. The team probably would’ve been pressured to start him, then he would most likely struggle behind the Bears OL and having no weapons like Kelce and Bears fans/media would’ve started calling him a bust. That’s what was more likely to happen. And I’m just gonna say that Mahomes basically just scrambles and looks for Kelce. He holds on to the ball longer than anyone and I don’t see a lot of “anticipation throws.”

  14. If in game processing is a concern you have to pass on him. Improvement in that area is a coin flip. And Improvement doesn't guarantee enough Improvement in order to be successful.

  15. GM’s always want a player to sit because it buys them at least another year or two for ‘development’. Poles got two first round QB’s, a bevy of vets, and he busted on all his top ten picks except Roquan. He was probably around much longer than his work merited.

  16. One of the dirty truths about Watson and Mahomes that everyone is trying to correct in hindsight is that none of them had good grades or evaluations across the league. It's just the truth, none of them including Trubisky were good prospects.

  17. Who was the college scout that graded Mahomes. is he legally blind? how can you watch film of an arm like that and TRADE up so you dont have to take Mahomes. Its the worst draft decision in NFL history. That scouts name should be as famous as Bartman

  18. please show the films to us. show us side by side. how they could not see mahomes arm . forget the rest. just his arm on Joe Biden is worth the pick
