How to Get More Pop on Your Putt | Disc Golf Tips for Beginners

There are few things that come and go within our game as a confident putting game, and for many beginners, the confident distance of putting feels extremely small. 15-20 foot putts seem effortless during casual rounds, and yet when the pressure mounts a 10 footer becomes a monumental task. The more I work with new players, struggles on the putting green seem to be one of the easiest places for players to save strokes.

Imagine walking through a round knowing you not only hit all of your putts 20 feet and in, but you had a solid chance of making all of your putts 40 feet and in as well? For many players the further they get from the basket it feels as if their putt just doesn’t have the juice to make it to the basket. Yet when pros putt it just effortlessly glides that smooth controlled 60 feet to the pin. What if I told you there was a way for you to get more pop/power into your putt so you could drain them from downtown?? What’s the secret? You’ll have to watch to find out!!

  1. I love your videos man. Something I do with my friends I'm introducing to disc golf, is I play catch with them with the putter they are going to use for 15 minutes or so before we play. Then literally stand behind the basket and ask them to throw it to me. After first couple of wins I stop standing behind the basket.

  2. I remember when i first started to try and learning spin putting. There were like 3 videos on the entirity of youtube that walked you through it and none of them really worked with my style. Now im back into golfing again and trying to relarn the spin putt and there has been like 20 videos just this year posted on it. Gotta love all the channels like these trying to help people learn the sport and give them less of a learning curve.

  3. Pronation for spin putts? I can't figure out how to turn my hand downward when spin putting (or any putting), it seems like it's supposed to be the opposite and use supination. Help?

  4. Dude! These were night and day successful changes for me. Been playing along time and changed my putt dozens of times. I’ve tried some aspects of these but never all at once. My thought was if I change too many things at once I won’t be able to tell what helped but the reality is all of these things helped! I went from 70-80% from 20 feet to well over 90% in the first hour of giving these tips a try. Very helpful even all the way back to 25 feet. From circle one I’m having some noticeable changes but not a significant change from that distance.

  5. Dang Robbie, your putt looks so clean! Makes me want to practice, time to wheel out the practice basket. Lets GOOO!

  6. I see that when you do supination you start the disc at a Hyzer and supinate it to flat. so if you do pronation do you start the disc anhyzer?

  7. These are great tips. Love it. I think something that helped for me too was curling my middle and ring finder under the disc towards my palm rather than having them more or less straight under the disc. Along with the supination this allowed me to give the disc a lot more speed and pop from opening my hand up when releasing. Also i found that I wasn’t getting anything from transferring my weight on my stagger putt. Turns out i was thinking of moving my weight forward instead up up into the disc. This caused me to only transfer weight between my legs and not to the disc. So rather than rocking back and forth per say. Maybe its better to think of it as a diagonal upward motion.

  8. Great video but you didn't explain pronation and supination at all. Left me scratching my head wondering what you meant, and now I'm going to have to guess. Would love a more detailed explanation!

  9. I have heard about Perfect Pat 365 but I have not yet found a way to download it. Does anybody have any information on this?

  10. I don't need "pop" because if I miss a 20ft putt it will easily become a 30ft putt.

  11. Great tips. Thanks! Something that was not stated but is clear in this video… a casual, positive, in the zone attitude really accentuates all the tips and practice.

  12. I changed my putting stance over the year. I thought i was doing well but I wasn't.

So I was placing lies every meter til 20 meters. I was then really starting at 1 meter and moved back as my muscle memory kicked in. I change the way I reach back and where my hand goes etc. I changed my stance etc and applied philo's "apple pie" tipp about the rhythm etc. I tried to smoothen my putts as much as possible. When forcing with my hands I had all kinds of weird movements in my hand. But now most of my force comes from a smooth weight shirt and the hand just guides the disc really.. building on the momentum caused by the weight shift.

I think that training helped me a lot. I feel really comfortable inside C1 now and putts hit the same part of the basket most of the time. Next I will try to add elements like hight, straddle etc.

I'm starting to feel confident at 10 meters and made putts from 13 meters too. Getting way more putts in from that range than before. My longest putt was 15 meters. Something I couldn't do before.

So practicing putting is super cool and fun once you found a motion that works for you. My drive is still a mess butt my putting game has saved me quite a few strokes already.

My goal is to extend my range to 20 meters now.

    Good luck on your putting

  13. that was you with long hair? I cut my hair 2 years ago for fun. I get it down to the middle of my back and then go choppy chopp.

  14. Thank you so much, Robbie, for this instruction video.
I now know why I suck so badly when it comes to putting.
The palm down to palm up technique is what I was not doing. I just tried to keep the disc flat as I struggled to get it to the basket. No wonder I couldn't hit anything over 2 meters!
I cannot wait to go out and incorporate this technique into my putting that you've shown me.
    Thank you, Robbie!!
