What Is Your Downswing Trigger? (You Better Have One)



Do you have downswing trigger? You better have one. This is what you should be using to hit every shot. It is something you use to fire your legs and hips. There are many different downswing triggers I teach so you need to choose one.

Most golfers are literally just whacking away at the ball solely with their arms. If you are doing this how are you ever going to use your body to hit the ball? You never will. To get using your body you nee to be thinking of using your body. This is where the downswing trigger comes in.

Again, this is something from your waist down you use to hit the ball. In this tip, I show the easiest downswing trigger. The one that most of my students choose. It’s your belt buckle and thinking of turning it to hit your shots. So you have this thought of turning your belt buckle in your mind before you even start back. Once you hit the top you immediately turn the belt buckle or you immediately apply your downswing trigger. Once you fire the lower body the arms now follow.

So give this downswing trigger a try. It’s vital you even have a thought of something from the waist down that gets you hitting the golf ball. If you are at least thinking about using your legs and hips you are on your way to doing so.

  1. I’m a lefty, and my trigger has always been to fire my right hip towards the sky. It helps create my weight transfer.

  2. My latest rounds my hips were sore using my body for the first time it's like neo using his eyes for the first time in the matrix lol.

  3. I'm trying to use right knee moving forward, followed by left cheek of my backside going back.
    Hoping to get a more effective one from this program.

  4. My trigger used to be straightening my left leg, which I picked up from your Swing Machine Golf series back in 2007. As I got older and began lifting my left heel on the backswing, my trigger now is to simply replant that heel to start the downswing. I think that’s the easiest trigger for those of us who lift the lead heel going back.

  5. I have been watching you for a while now. I stopped coming over the top. Slowed everything down, opened my hips, but I'm still not getting the distance I want. At Impact my arms are straight and it looks like I'm going to a chicken wing. But again at empact I'm straight. Any help??

  9. I got this goin pretty well but I’m long straight left when I start with my body and arms shutoff. You’ve mentioned to me in another video comment what I need to do to just get it down the middle but keep the length and straight flight.

    I have a friend who has to win.
    How do you deal with people who get in your head on purpose?
    He uses it on who's ever leading,
    It's been me for a minute. I don't want to golf with all the head games.

  14. Hey Paul, during the downswing should I delay the upper body rotation or keep my back towards the target as long as possible ?

    I try to fire my hips from the top but my divots are still going to the left and I'm pulling or fading the golf ball. I'm very inconsistent with my driver it makes me not even want to use it.

    Ive practiced trying to open my hips up during the backswing and found I wasn't pulling and slicing as bad. Don't think I turn enough during the backswing which only feeds my bad shots.

  15. It was not my best round of golf yesterday.
    I was chasing my swing. I couldn't find the ball.
    I was trying to find the sweetspot.
    I was thinking about my swing instead of just swinging.
    I was using my lower body to start my swing. I tried everything..it wasn't terrible.
    It's wasn't pretty.
    It was golf.
    I'm not giving up on this at all, Paul…
    I did do what you said. I waited till my Buddy hit a nice shot and paid him the compliment.
    He didn't stop completely.
    Alex got it yesterday.
    Alex has respect for us older guys.
    It didn't keep him from slamming his clubs into his bag a few times.
    I will let David and Alex know about the compliment idea.
    I'm saving the other one for myself.
    I actually wanted to try it out yesterday for an experiment.
    The Dirty Pool will have to wait 4rrr. another day.
    The compliment Worked on him… no real reason to mess him up even though I wasn't playing well.

  16. Mine is my left knee moves straight back and my right knee moves towards the target. It stops my legs from swaying etc
