Whitbread Round the World Race 1981-82 | Official Film 4k | “The Greatest Race”

Enjoy this classic documentary film “The Greatest Race” from our archives 🎞️ The third edition of the Race took place in 1981-82 with 29 boats started out from Southampton, England on 29 August 1981

Conny van Rietschoten returned to the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1981-82 determined not just to defend his title but to win both line honours on every leg, and the overall race on handicap. Impressively, with his Flyer II, he was able to accomplish just that. He also had some young and impressive young talent on board to help him on his quest, including Grant Dalton, who would go on to become an icon of the race in his own right, while Sir Peter Blake skippered his own campaign for the first time.

  1. So musher nicer to watch than the 5 enclosed deck foiling foiling tech monsters of the last edition.

  2. Love seeing these prior races. So much has changed, and so much remains the same
