COVID-19 Update – 5/6/20

Hi this is Palmdale Mayor Steve Hofbauer with your COVID-19 update for May 6.

As I mentioned yesterday, Governor Newsom announced that California has met some of the criteria necessary to move towards the next phase of reopening the state and that it is now appropriate for some businesses to begin opening shop again beginning this Friday.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger just announced today the first round of businesses and locations that can reopen in the County of Los Angeles, with safety precautions, starting this Friday May 8.

These include trails, golf courses, florists, car dealers, and stores that sell toys, books, clothing, sporting goods, and music. The public health order only allows for curbside pickup. In-store shopping will still be on hold for the time being.

Many of the items on the list are suggestions we made in our Community Renaissance Plan that we submitted to the County last week. This list has locations and businesses that have ability to maintain safe physical distancing. The Department of Public Health will allow other businesses to open as soon as they can guarantee guidelines are in place to ensure the safety of staff and customers.

The State is allowing Counties to roll in additional openings within Phase II including the prospects of restarting hospitality as long as it conforms to the health requirements set forth. In other words, if businesses and consumers follow the guidelines properly then it will make it easier for more businesses to open.

As we are slowly reopening, it remains as important as ever to continue to maintain physical distancing, continue to wear face coverings, stay home when sick and wherever possible to rely on pickup and delivery for the things you need.

I want to thank everyone for your patience and understanding as we work through this challenging issue. It’s been encouraging to see our community come together in so many ways, with acts of generosity and kindness over and over again.

We will continue to work towards opening our businesses and reuniting our community in a safe and sensible manner. Continue to follow us on our website, www.cityofpalmdale.org/coronavirus and on Facebook at City of Palmdale – Government for all the latest updates and news.

Thanks, and remember…Palmdale Cares about YOU!
