Help me understand, fighter are independent 1099 contractors right? This means a company cannot put them on company health insurance, creating an association health plan could work, but one would need to be created (no union, that would kill the sport). But how can an independently paid contractor go under a long term contract with the UFC?

I love the punk, but his understanding of how economists work is sad. Paying the fighters 20% of profits should be a bare minimum. Saying that the UFC needs 100% of profits to be successful is not just ridiculous is stupid insane. If the UFC pays the fighters 30% of profits, the UFC will still be making billions, maybe not as many millions, but it will still be profitable. How can the UFC afford to pay Dana 30 million a year? Or look how much the CEOs make in the millions I'm sure.

Interim titles are nothing more than promotional tools. The UFC uses them so they can say a card is headlined by a "title fight." The UFC also uses interim titles as a way to manipulate champions into doing what they want. If you remember correctly, Francis was champion for only 3 months when the announced an interim title. They wanted Francis to make a quick turnaround and headline UFC 265 in Houston. He didnt want to, so they manufactured a fake belt Gane and Derrick Lewis.
So no, intierim "champions" aren't champions. At best, they're just #1 contenders.

I think Tony has the argument to be calling himself champion instead of interim, he got the belt fighting a ranked guy when Conor was out doing his boxing thing and was supposed to fight for the real one against khabib but got hurt doing press and khabib gets it fighting AL who was maybe ranked 9. So to me khabib didn't win the belt till he beat Justin since Justin took the real belt from Tony.
