One of the biggest issues I see with senior golfers is that they hit the ball solely with their arms. As we get older we get weaker so this hitting only leads to less and less distance. This tip shows senior golfers how to get their body moving for more distance.
I came up with this tip after seeing Mike Austin and Wild Bill Mehlhorn talk about using their lower body as the power source. Once I saw their tips a couple of years ago I decided to try it with a few of my seniors. Within a few minutes they all started to get their body moving and get more distance. For reference this is now between 20-30 senior golfers I have tried this on.
Although everyone so far picked up on it super fast and all of these seniors got more distance they all did this one thing that I talk about in this tip that ruined their progress. So if you are a senior golfer and want more distance watch this tip and start doing it asap but be sure to watch until the end so you don’t make the same mistake.

Probably really good for people with lower back issues.
Good thought, Paul. Thanks again. I am always looking for a way to think about turning lower body first. Will take this to the practice tee and course tomorrow!!
I like this tip, Paul. I’m 78, and when you get up in my age group and balance becomes an issue, it’s so easy to just stand there and swing. This is a great tip to counteract that tendency, and as an added benefit it promotes good rhythm and tempo. Thanks for sharing! 👍
Great tip, and like all of your advice it just makes sense. The sad fact is that we as humans always want to over complicate things or overdo the advice. If a doctor tells you take one tablet a day,you don’t think I’ll get better quicker if I take the whole bottle! Great video and thanks for the advice.
I just watched a Mike Austin video followed by a Wild Bill Mehlhorn video, and I have to say that the key difference between watching those videos and then THIS video is quite simply this – explanation. I felt like I needed a degree in physics to fully grasp what each of the others was saying.
Not the case with you Paul, and that's what separates you from most other instructors. You communicate very effectively and in a way that people easily understand.
Thanks for all you do and keep up your excellent work. So many are benefitting from it. 👌
Have to give this a try today
I like the way you explain these tips and have tried to incorporate these into my swing. You are correct in that things like this can be overdone. When I overdo, I find myself mishitting and have to throttle some things back. My favorite tips are keeping the wrists and arms loose, and that older tip on getting the swing path to go from inside out. I don't have a baby draw yet but have eliminated the 30 yard slice. It takes practice to get all of this stuff in a swing with setbacks and victories along the way. I don't think you could teach the things you do if you were in your 20s as you identify and address many issues for older golfers. Thank you!
Paul, as you know, I've been an advocate of your teaching for over a decade. Now that I'm 75, I was facing issues and loss of distance. So, I saw the Easiest Swing channel on YouTube and they talk about "La Danse du Golf", which is exactly what this video is suggesting — Left heel up on the backswing. Jack Nicklaus taught to lift the heel slightly with wedges and progressively more up to driver. This is the one thing I've now incorporated in my game that I hadn't heard you ever advocate. Now, I'm glad to see you endorsing it, too. However, I totally agree with your caution, because I did that at first, too. Great tip for seniors like me!
I'm senior (79) and this works! It is much more effective if I stand tall when I do it. Good tip and Thanks!!!
Great stuff, Paul. Listen, I went back and watched your video "Backswing Shoulder Plane" a few times and realized I've been 100% brainwashed into believing the ONLY way was to point the left shoulder down Like Saguto and J Chown (and many others) preach. I'm done with that. My speed is going up nicely your way and I'm hitting it pure. I wasted years on that stuff. It's like a religion. Even in the comment section some people were shocked that there is another way. Thanks.
Great visual/verbal explanation to do a simple rotation of the lower body Paul. Combo this with probably your best video tip, " 50 % Swing Effort " and the rock solid " Neutral Grip " video, and it would be impossible not to find improvement in 100 % of those who practice this way.
Thanks….any idea for what swing speed should be for 78 year old male using this technique?
Hi Paul… Big fan. Bought your program a while back. Just wanted to give you a thanks for improving my swing speed. I hit the ball pretty good thanks to coaching from you and have actually shot PAR once.. And as I've hit the age of 65, was losing distance… didn't really understand it. Recently, I re-watched your "Effortless Power" video. I wanted to preface this with I use the DeWiz Golf Watch App. It measures hand speed. My hand speed had been stuck on 15.1.. .that's 4 miles per hour under Vijay Singh and Henrik Stenson (two pros who've been measured with the watch and used for reference.) Nothing I'd been doing could get it above 17.1 mph. As I was practicing with this today, and feeling frustrated, I heard you in my head saying relax the wrists and let go of the tension. BAM… 18.8 mph… that's almost a 4 mph improvement and the best part.. my swing was smoother, I felt I wasn't coming out of my shoes… and I can see with some practice, I can get that speed up… That 4mph hand speed translates to about 20 mph in clubhead speed… That's huge… I'm so excited that I had to say thank you. I'm jazzed… best, Keith Miller
Thanks Paul. You never stop thinking and sharing with us ways to help us improve. Having purchased your Body Swing Program and your Virtual Golf Swing video , and watching your tips like this since 2018 – it would take too long to mention all the ways you have helped this 72 yr old bad back and knees golfer keep his handicap around 9-10. Recently I went back to your help on how to stop hitting thin / fat shots which led to my absolute worst round in years (91) , to scoring 76 this past Friday. I would recommend your instruction to anyone who wants to improve and get more enjoyment out of golf, especially a senior like me.
My swing speed monitor says I gained 20yds with up, down, up. Feels WAY faster. Need to try this on the range. I was wrongfully putting a delay between down and up. Thanks!
