Stuttgart launched their 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign with an almighty bang, beating Bochum 5-0 as sharp shooter Silas repeated the brace he netted in last season’s corresponding fixture. In turn, the 2023 playoff survivors have now lost just one of their previous nine regular-season league matches.

Against expectations, Bochum nearly got a dream start less than 180 seconds into the new campaign. A through-ball from Erhan Mašović sliced through the defence and found Philipp Hofmann, though he eventually fired wide under pressure from Dan-Axel Zagadou. Stuttgart rallied and took control, so it was of no surprise when Serhou Guirassy soon marked his first league game as a permanent Swabian with a scintillating goal. Almost telepathically, Hiroki Ito slid the ball through to the Guinean, who timed a run to perfection beyond the Bochum backline, before smashing a laser shot high into the net to get Stuttgart up and running.

Having taken just one point from their opening eight games last season, Bochum were naturally eager for an instant riposte. Stuttgart refused to oblige, and Jeong Woo-yeong was twice gifted a chance through defensive mixups, only for Manuel Riemann to race out and block him from distance, before Ivan Ordets put the ball behind to prevent him from firing in at point-blank range after the Swabians had worked their way into the box. Yet, it was from the latter move that Stuttgart went 2-0 up, with Zagadou meeting the resultant corner from Chris Führich high at the near post to head past a helpless Riemann.

Bochum needed a complete transformation in fortune after HT to take anything, but the Reds continued to dominate. And moments after Mašović missed a close chance from Alexander Nübel’s block at the one end, the game was over as a contest just before the hour mark, with Bochum’s backline again being caught in unfavourable positions. Führich had all the time in the world to make his second goal contribution of the day, with a high swinging cross from the left flank being met at the far post by Silas, who slotted in low without any resistance for his third goal in three competitive games.

And if the Bochum corpse was still twitching, it was thoroughly set alight and desecrated with nearly half an hour still to play, when Pascal Stenzel found Silas running unmarked inside the box to again side foot in and set him up for a maiden career hat-trick. The remainder of this riotous opener could be best described as a carnival, and Guirassy also had time to complete a brace of his own, with a virtual carbon copy of his first effort, as he slotted into the corner after latching onto Stenzel’s smart through-ball.
