This is a hugely important golf lesson and it has a huge impact on where you strike the golf ball, the distance your golf ball goes, the direction of the golf ball and therefore how many greens we hit! How your irons sit on the ground also affects your grip in golf, yes, seriously!
So many golfers ask me how to compress your irons, how to strike your irons pure, how to gain distance with irons, how to get ball then divot, best irons tips, iron tips from pros, how to hit irons consistently, how to hit irons longer, how to hit irons straighter, how to stop hitting bad iron shots and so on! But how your irons should sit on the ground is so important and if you get this right it will get you reducing your handicap and your scores.
Follow this simple golf tip and simple golf lesson and you will start to notice a HUGE improvement!

How should your irons sit on the ground!? Don’t get this wrong because it had a huge impact on your strike location & direction
Alex, where does your left thumb sit on the grip? Left of the logo, right? Thank you!
This is a question I've had for years.
I carry a 3 iron, and if my fairway woods are underperforming any day, I use the 3 iron.
Longest iron is a 2 iron. A proper 2 iron not a driving or utility iron. Fully matches the rest of the set.
Great tip for those higher handicappers
Great video. Can you do one on the release for driving? I have been tought the drinks and throwing them onto the ground after impact but really struggling to get to grips with it!
Love your lessons. They are easy to understand and well presented. You cover topics that we never get from an instructor. Thanks for all you do.
Your videos are so helpful. Thank you!
I only have 6 and 7 long irons but struggle with keeping long shots straight and consistent. Fine with shorter irons and wedges. 6 especially I lack confidence so dont use as often as I should. Got to 10.2 hcap but struggle to get to single figures 😥
Really think your videos are great and the longest art in my bag is a three on
My longest iron is a 5. I used to carry a 4 that I thought I hit well, but Arccos told me that it really didn't go further than the 5, so it was replaced by a hybrid. I've recently been trying to set up with the toe higher and making really sure the club is in my fingers, and my iron miss has gone from right (fade) to left (draw). There are SO MANY variables!
I've got 6-LW for irons. And a 5H
My longest is a 2 iron currently in the bag.
Alex,
I have a question about lie. I was fitted for 3 deg upright clubs. I could hit my long irons decent and my short irons were garbage. I flattened my clubs to 1 deg upright and now my short irons are fire and my long irons are garbage. Is it normal for people to have different lie angles in their bag? Should i go 3 deg upright on my long irons and stay at 1 deg upright on my short irons?
Thanks. I have been following your lessons quite a long time ago. From Malaysia hc17 66yrs old
One thing you forgot to mention which was in one of previous video is that the forces on the club on the downswing tend to bend the shaft in towards you due to clubhead toe weight which is offset from lever arm which is the shaft. This weight wants to move downward due centripedal force but the downward force bends the shaft inward.
I’ve got a cheeky old 1 iron that I used this last weekend to outdrive the guys I got matched with 😂. These guys had brand new Taylormade drivers 😂
Moving forward it’s hands slightly forward of centre. Thx Alex I think this will help me compress the ball better
My longuest iron is a 5. I could have bought my Ping Karsten set with a 5 hybrid instead of a 5 iron but I just picked what was in stock at the shop. This is a decision I regret today, because I rarely hit my 5 iron past 7 iron distance, often shorter because of mishit, while I wish I had a hybrid a little easier to hit than my 4 hybrid.
My longest iron is a 5-iron these days.
I've been asking this simple question for ever.
I am a retired engineer and you do a great job explaining WHY the particular drill and set up is. A great help.
Longest iron is 4 ,no rescue club I use a 7 wood ,hate offset clubs as my natural shot is a draw so I don’t need any help going left . One thing to mention is that offset clubs force your shaft position with more hands forward than than clubs with little offset ,this is very noticeable when I pick up the wife’s ping offset shovels, easy to hit but hook city for me .I play mizuno 919 tour irons with kbs lite x shafts and for the most part games fine ,worst case is the shanks which appear from time to time and kills my game ,had them on and off ever since I started playing this game ,I will check my set 8pm after this video later today at the range ,cheers .
I so wanted and needed something like this…
My biggest issue is my clubs are for sure too short for me at 6’4” so my swings fkd as I’m way too close to the ball to compensate.
Hi Alex I absolutely love the videos. Do you do any 1 to 1 lessons in person , I would love to have a couple mate. I live in Kent
Nice divot at the end are you the club pro at Mottram Hall ?
