Amazing Ashes gets fitting finish with Zak Crawley | Vaughany & Tuffers Cricket Club Podcast

Ben and Michael are joined by the Telegraph’s Chief Cricket Correspondent Nick Hoult to look back on an incredible eight weeks.

England recovered from the worst possible start to draw the series 2-2 with Stuart Broad delivering the final blow to Australia in his last act as a cricketer.

We pay tribute to Broad and ask if it is the right time for him to call it a day.

Zak Crawley was one of England’s stars of the summer and he speaks to Michael about his turnaround in form and what really happened with the celebrations on Monday evening.

We also look ahead to the upcoming ODI World Cup and what England’s Test team will look like in India at the start of next year.

  1. Would England have taken 2-2 before the series started? No way. They got unlucky with the rain in Manchester, but ultimately they were also a dodgy ball change away from losing 3-1. The English are doing a lot of back-patting, but there’s no trophies for moral victories.

  2. Those talking about it could have been 3-2 if not for the rain, so then it could have been 3-1 if not for that horrible mistake of ball change from umpires, hell the 2005 series could have been 2-2 if not for the rain in final test. It's not about could-have-beens, it's about the score at the end. Having said that, I definitely think England were the better team over the course of 5 games especially after the inclusion of Woakes & Wood and Australia lost because of their batting failure on more occassions than their bowling. In 2 or 3 innings, they wasted away the chance of batting England out of the game when they were given one courtesy of England's bazball style. And I completely agree with Vaughny @10:50, that was the turning point of the series.

  3. 2 Kiwis saving English cricket 😂😂 along with 2 umpires swapping out an old ball for a new one, at least they took the wrapper off first 🤷🏾‍♀️

  4. Typical English BS….if, if, if…how about no rain on day 4 in 5th test, and no DODGY ball change..AUS wins….never seen a ball react like that…….never heard so much crap…how about Vaughan talks about Murray Mints winning the series in 2005…

  5. SO, now the AUS team was 'defeated'…..what crap….getting 335 in the 4th innings at the Oval is world class even with the dodgy ball!!!

  6. Appropriate title: The IF podcast

Michael: Yeah, IF England blah blah and IF blah blah and IF blah blah, then England would have won.
Nick: Right, but don't forget also that IF blah blah and IF blah blah, but IF England blah blah, then England was clearly winning!
Michael: IF blah blah, when Australia was blah blah, then IF England was blah blah.
Ben: IF they picked blah blah, then England was going to win this 5-match series 7-0.
Michael: Let's all have an IF party!

  7. It was an amazing Ashes ever. Although the Aussies played a good traditional cricket but the Bazball won anyway. Congrats England.

  8. Bazball is so awesome it can't win the Ashes on home soil. I get it though; If England played better, they would have won. So they should have won. Makes perfect sense to me

  9. It wasn’t until Zac Crawley came on that anyone mentioned that England hadn’t actually won the series. The crowing from the English is unbelievable. They only drew a home series and have the audacity to criticise the travelling Aussie team after Australia won 2 away tests, this coming from an English team that is 0-13 in test matches in Australia in the last three Ashes series down under. Get some perspective.

  10. As a Kent boy, I KNEW Creepy would come good. Brilliant, classy bat, 10,000 runs coming! 😎 Also, I see why he stayed in the squad now! Scratch golfer – haha! Ace series, thanks to all, even Oz 😊 🇬🇧
