Golf Rules – Determining your Nearest Point of Relief and your Relief Area

SUBSCRIBE to GOLFRULES QUESTIONS
Q.
If you have interference from an immovable obstruction in the general area, how do you proceed?
.
A.
You are entitled to free relief from the interference, provided you can make a reasonable stroke at the ball.
You need to work out your Nearest Point of Relief, by determining the nearest spot where there is no interference from the immovable obstruction, that is not nearer the hole.
From here, you have one club-length in which to drop, that is no nearer the hole, and is within the same area of the course.
You may use any club to measure the relief area, but the relief area is determined by the longest club in your bag (except the putter), from the nearest point of relief.
