Australia retain the Ashes w/ Piers Morgan | Vaughany & Tuffers Cricket Club Podcast

Ben, Michael and Phil reflect on a frustrating fourth Test which ended in a draw after rain washed out most of the final two days.

Australia have now retained the Ashes and the best England can hope for is a drawn series.

We look back on the previous three Tests to see what England could have done differently and also address if anything could have been done over the weekend to ensure more overs were bowled.

Legendary broadcaster Piers Morgan joins the guys to discuss his frustrations at the series being drawn, his love of cricket and his admiration for England skipper Ben Stokes.

Plus, we check in with the Telegraph’s Chief Cricket Correspondent Nick Hoult ahead of the final Test at the Oval.

  1. Lost two test. Won one Test, One Draw. Could it be that the champion team is better than the individuals that dominate English cricket? Bearing in mind, this is on England's home deck, in conditions that favor them. Yet, barely a mention of Australia Winning away from home, in the face of most test series these days.

  2. England is the perfect team for millennials. As long as they feel they're winners no matter the results

  3. That's the problem with Piers Morgan. He speaks. Who cares about his disdain for Australia? Hang your heads in shame for even allowing him on the podcast. What does he know?

  4. Piers Morgan knows nothing about Cricket as he showed when facing Brett Lee! faced 6 balls got out 3 times and ended up with a broken wrist!!!!

  5. Ive really enjoyed listening to these Vaughan and Tufnell podcasts in the build up and during the Ashes, great guests, good banter etc. But Piers Morgan as a guest, why ?

  6. Listening to Piers Morgan bleating like a cut lamb was marvelously satisfying, but he seems to have reversed himself on the role of the weather since 2013…

  7. Disclaimer: I’m Australian.
But seriously, I accept England at the moment is playing better and we’re lucky to be up. But…. To suggest England are the better team is ridiculous. I’m their conditions maybe but they’ll get pumped down here, Bazball won’t work in Australia.

  8. Leach will be primed for Australia in 2.5 years, Vaughany is cut up. Lyon is the only finger spinner who has excelled on Australian pitches.

  9. This is all rubbish. This was the perfect opportunity to take the Aussies down. But they stuffed it in the first two tests. Poor decisions, poor shot selection, lazy fielding with no respect for the bowling that was put before them.

  10. Forget looking at the rules to avert future washouts. They will only end up biting the arse of England. England simply need to stick to the things they can control. Like becoming competitive cricketers and examining why they continue to loose or draw test cricket series instead of focussing on becoming entertaining Morris dancers. They could also change the ball much more often whenever an unfair advantage presents itself. We know now from the last test, that had they changed the ball more often during the series, in all probability they would have won the Ashes.
Not to be however. The well documented English triumphalism in the face of the inability to win, is perhaps their greatest Rubicon and I don't see them forging it any time soon. The true winner here is not even the game itself but the glorious comedy that emerges from every test match. It is truly imperishable and test cricket must be preserved in order the fantastic comedy never be lost.
