Since he's American, he's probably looking to play for a contending US team. Winnipeg can be a pretty lonely place to play, being in the middle of nowhere and all.

Hellybuyck had some great regular seasons in Winnipeg but he hasn't been the best goalie in many of his playoff series. Look at this year he got outplayed by his former backup whose salary was a fraction of the price in first round. The Jets who led their division halfway through the season almost became the first team to ever do that and miss the playoffs so it was clear many on the team gave up months ago. Jets need to rebuild and many don't want to be around for a rebuild and the team needs a new core. So make it happen.
Why did Paul Maurice suddenly leave Winnipeg nothing to do with the city it has to do with a toxic dressing room the GM needs to go and get someone in who can clean up this mess
Winnipeg knows what it means to lose their franchise and to get it back years later. Few other cities have a connection to their team off the back of this element. Jets fans are die hard and it's a great market to play in, there's no mistaking this.

Know why many marquee free agents in the NFL will sign with cold city small market teams such as Green Bay & Buffalo? Because these players get to skip the second half of winter with 80% of that league finishing their seasons come mid-January lmao. Many of these players such as Aaron Rodgers will migrate somewhere warmer after the season concludes too. This trend isn't going to change unless the NHL season starts in mid to late January and ends in July-Sept but fans will still clamor about "how hockey should be played in colder seasons only."

Biggest problem with the Jets is the GM
If/when the Sens move Debrincat, I'd be up for them taking Hellebuyck even, but not if the new contact is over $7-8 per year. Otherwise, Ottawa should beef up the team defense and get a more affordable goalie. Feel bad for the Jets though, not sure what's going on there, but something ain't right. Hope they can have success going forward. Cheers

I wish that the team could work it out with CH and PLD behind the scenes. Maybe the players have already done that, and still, the team hasn't gotten around to trading them. Now, the value the team can get for them is going to be less. Everyone now knows that they want out. Do you think a team is going to be paying top dollar for either of them ? I don't see the Jets as a contender, so maybe this restructuring can actually help them in the long run.

The worst thing is, I’m a huge Jets fan that lives in the US and I truly idolize Connor Hellebuyck being a goalie myself, and I never yet got to see a jets game in person yet and see him play and now with current circumstances it probably will never happen 😢
