England

Mark Wood is finally back and he couldn’t have been happier to be back. After having a light bowl two days out from the Test, he was in fine form with the bat on the eve of the Test. He didn’t mind showing off his rather impressive vocal chords either singing away while smashing a few balls around. With the series on the line, England have gone for the big shuffle, pushing Harry Brook up to No 3 in place of the injured Ollie Pope. Wood, meanwhile, returns alongside Moeen Ali, back from the finger injury he suffered in the first Test, and Chris Woakes, in his first Bazball Test. While that lends some much-needed variety to England’s bowling, it does lengthen their lower-order in other ways.

Playing XI: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Harry Brook, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Ben Stokes (c), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood

Australia

Mitchell Marsh was spotted having a one-on-one session with assistant coach Michael Di Venuto on Wednesday (July 5) before taking catches at gully. Cameron Green, meanwhile, was conspicuous by his absence, considering he’s always been one to have a bat a day out from a Test match. It could mean nothing or could be a sign that there’s some sort of injury that could result in a swap in all-rounders. The impressive Todd Murphy is back for sure in place of the injured Nathan Lyon, who will miss his first Test since 2013. And there’s the question mark over the toss-up between Josh Hazlewood, who’s pulled up quite nicely in the last two Tests in terms of where his body is at, and Scott Boland.

Probable XI: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green/Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland/Josh Hazlewood, Todd Murphy

Did you know?

Steve Smith, who is set to play his 100th Test, is the only player to have breached the 9000-run milestone by the eve of the milestone.
