Australia’s stand-in spinner Todd Murphy is bracing himself for England – and the home fans – to be on the attack on Thursday at Headingley in the 3rd Ashes Test.
Murphy has been catapulted into the side after Nathan Lyon tore a calf muscle during the second Test at Lord’s and finds himself thrust into an intense moment between the old rivals.
England must win after going 2-0 down with three games to play and the atmosphere is expected to be hostile towards the tourists in the aftermath of Jonny Bairstow’s divisive dismissal at Lord’s.
It is all fresh territory for Murphy, a 22 year-old right arm bowler with just 12 first-class appearances and four Tests to his name.
“I think they’ll probably come even harder at me,” he said, referring to England’s clear attempt to attack Lyon in the first two Tests. “Obviously, I haven’t played a hell of a lot of Test cricket so it’s a challenge that presents itself. They’re going to keep taking the game on.”
Murphy’s previous Test experience came during the tour of India earlier this year and he admitted he was expecting a more combative welcome than he received on that trip.
“I think this might be a bit different to the Indian crowd,” he said. “They made a lot of noise, but they were all quite friendly. From speaking to the boys, this is probably the most hostile ground you get in England and I’m quite looking forward to it if I do get the opportunity.”
“I’m sure they won’t hold back,” he added. “But I’ll just embrace it and try and have a good time with it.”

Australia – motivated by England's hysterical hypocrisy – will pulverize the pathetic Poms at Headingley.
Murphy is a very capable bowler. He can turn the ball and has a good wrong 'un. I think he's got a level-headed attitude, too.
Well done young man. We all wish you well and just go get ‘em and enjoy it.
Hey Todd, mate think and trust what you have, but remember “Underneath the Southern Cross I stand, a sprig hog Wattle in my hand” …….and rip into them mate! 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺!
Rip into them Poms brother .
just remember young fella that it’s against the spirit of cricket to stump an Englishman out of his crease, or catch them or do anything really within the rules to take a wicket. be nice to the English boys
He bowled well in india I think he’ll bowl better in England
Has he got sandpaper in his pocker??
Who's going to pilot the Thunderbirds if Todd Murphy plays at Headingley…?
Look out poms this bloke is no dummy
This guy can bowl, he wont let the team down !
Don’t forget Todd , to play in the spirit of the game and rip through these winging pricks!!
I suspect that the treatment Australia received at the end of the last test will provide nothing but inspiration.
Wish Leach was fit. Would have been battle of the speccy spinners!
This guy should consider contact lenses. He makes us look like nerds
Go son – Aussies have never cared in the slightest what the whinging poms say about us. Water off a duck's back!
Let’s face it, he’s not distraught about getting a game in the Ashes. 😂
If his bowling is as impressive as his interview, Lyon might not be so missed….
Doppelgänger of Daniel Vittori
He looks like his glasses are special needs specs 😮😂😂😂 good luck mate you may be better drinking 10 pints 🍻 of fosters & lighting your farts 💨🔥🔥🔥
He is ready ..and will be regular….in team ………natho. Lyon the great 💯 is touching 37..
Todd Murphy the Father of india.
He's good, only 22 and got a 7 for against India on a road in India in his first test…only 7 first-class matches before Test debut (same as Warne but not comparing)…hope England underestimate him
Who’s this guy?
