Rule 18.3 in the USGA Rules of Golf provides for a Provisional Ball. This is a ball that can be hit after our first ball is in jeopardy of being lost. Knowing the rule, its options and what it permits can save us all time and strokes in a difficult situation. Thanks, Andy. I will have my book in my bag.
I've been watching several of your very helpful videos….however I cannot understand why you continue to use faulty audio equipment. You have a bad connection to the wireless mic and it's EXTREMELY distracting.
What am I hitting if I find my first ball?
Is it required to go look for lost ball?
Soooooo, you are saying I can hit a provisional on EVERY hole and play that ball with NO penalty ??.. so, basically I always have a choice of which ball to play ?? That makes no sense ?
So say I play a provisional because I thought there was a chance that the ball was lost outside of a penalty area, but when I get up to where I believe it went I find that it is a red penalty area but still cannot find the ball, what are my options? I assume the provisional is no longer a provisional and you would take red penalty relief for the first ball. Is this right?
nono..you can not just freely chose any of the 2 balls u find – and call that the provi one-
It could be a 3. ball- witch u know we very often find as looking for the 1. one..
therefor- u have to tell any time how u marked your own ball(s)
If not abel to name it BEFORE you go looking- – go back and take nr 5…..
Only if you find the ball, then there is no penalty on the provisional ball so long as it is equal or further away from the hole as to the first ball? If you don't find the ball then it's a 2 stroke penalty?
My partner hit his second shot in a tall grassy area then chose to hit a provisional. The first provisional he hit went into a different grassy area, then he proceeded to hit another provisional which he hit in play and was further than his original ball. We then proceeded to look for his original ball which he found and that's the one he played. My question is how many provisional balls can you hit before you have to commit to one of the provisional balls even if you find your original ball.
