Yes the ball matters… Just yesterday hit a solid 3 wood and predicted it went 267… I got the and was only 252… Then i remembered i used this one year old cheap Nike hard ball… 267 would have been the Pro V1… Significant difference but the biggest difference actually is near the greens where you should really do your test… My short game with a dollar golf ball is like a 20 handicap… With a Pro V1 it's as good as there is on tour… Much bigger consequences to your score.
Distance is not the only parameter of a ball's quality. We used to love Top(Rock)Flites for hard baked fairways because they'd roll forever, but they had no spin to hold greens.

Well it's actually nice to know the $20 ball gives you a little added distance at least. It doesn't really justify being 4 times as much, and I'm not sure if it was a fluke or not, but still.
Are those expensive balls good? Or are they just hard shelled like a top flite xl or something that will go really long(aka what they use in long drive comps).

I often find prov1s, usually nowhere near the fairway so they don't guarantee a straight hit.
