The History of NASCAR’s Oldest Winner: Harry Gant

NASCAR used to be the realm of the experienced; you weren’t expected to hit your stride until your mid 30’s. But Jeff Gordon kicked off the young gun revolution and we’ve seen the average age of NASCAR drivers dropping ever since. But one man stood alone as the last vanguard of the old way. While Jeff Gordon was getting his first wins, this guy won his last race, and when he did so, He was one year older than Jeff Gordon is right now as of publishing this video. He went by many nicknames, but Handsome Harry Gant was one of a kind and the last of the old heads in NASCAR.

  1. Hate the product, but you gotta admit that pretty much all the tobacco liveries were bangers.

  2. And in that final race, ‘94 Hooters 500 Gant had a top 10 finish going when the engine blew towards the closing stages of the race, leaving him to finish 33rd in his final race

  3. For those of you who were too young when Mr. September ran his crazy streak….Mr. Gant not only won every CUP race….he won every BUSCH race too in same timeframe. Imagine seeing the same driver win every Saturday AND Sunday for weeks on end. TOTAL DOMINATION

  4. hey im not a nascar fan but i love watching one of your videos every now and then due to how good you are at making them. pacing, your voice, the length, everything i love other than im not that interested in nascar.

HOWEVER i saw your april fools video on the ak74 and i just wanted to say that i would absolutely LOVE to see you have another channel where you made similar content but on other stuff that you find interesting no matter what it is.

    just my two cents 🙂

  5. You missed Gant being n Days of Thunder! At least his car anyway, which magically turned into Brett Bodine's after being stuck by Cole Trickle.

  6. I was maybe 11 or 12 years old watching Harry get spun and hit at Matinsville, and I collectively cursed in horror along with the whole of NASCAR fans all rooting for this 4 peat to happen with the awsome, yet slightly underdog team and driver, of the awsome looking SKOAL Olds. This was one of the greatest wins I've witnessed in 34 years of watching CUP

  7. Genuine nice guy when he would win he bought steaks at his steakhouse restaurant in taylorsville …monte

  8. i Robert K sill thinking it sill keeping hand off of workings for it to doing racing NASCAR like JR and SR Dale and others had be doing it by now, it is cool to doing it not gave to you .

  9. Great content sir! Harry has the distinction of being the one guy everyone liked. Never heard anyone say they didn't like him, and if you brought up his name it always brought a smile.

  10. Love this! I was there for the Dover race from the Mr September stretch. He housed everyone and ran that wicked high line the whole time.

  11. Life begins at 51!! It certainly did for "Hammering Harry Gant"! The former home contractor became one of the best race car drivers ever!!! Don't forget his IROC win! 18 Cup wins, I believe 21 Busch series wins, and all those sportsman trips to victory lane!!! Now if NASCAR could just pull it's head out of it's ass long enough to see a ray of light, and get a breath of fresh air, Harry Gant would be in the Hall Of Fame where he belongs!!! And do it immediately, he and his wonderful family have waited long enough!! 🇺🇲🏁33/7

  12. Who else would like to hear Slap talk about the 2001 Daytona 500, and the impact it had on the sport?

  13. Harry had an awesome streak and won several races close together when most other drivers his age were running in junk cars as mid pack racers. I think Dick Trickle still remains as Nascar's oldest winner. He won 2 Busch Grand National races at 55 and 56 years old. Also a pole at Dover when he was 57. Tha was racing against guys half his age. He was just a special talent. You will likely never see someone that old win again. Harry's record as the oldest Cup winner may stand forever too. Drivers are retiring earlier and the ones that stick around are not in good cars.

  14. Gordon was such a blow to CART. Everyone fully expexted him to go into the big game of US racing, which in the early to mid 90s was still comsidered Indycar by a wide a margin. But he ended up signing in Nascar.

  15. You should do video about these tracks
    Ontario Motor Speedway
    Trenton Speedway
    Riverside International Raceway
    Texas World Speedway

  16. Slapshoes, you need to do one on Dick trickle. Please.?

Mainly because his rookie of the year speech.

Oldest driver to win it. In his 50s lol.
