The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R ($47,645 CAD as specced, ~$43,645 USD) and the Golf GTI ($40,245 CAD as specced, ~$37,995 USD) are the newest hot hatches on the block. Seen today is the GTI in its performance manual trim, and the Golf R equipped with a DSG automatic transmission. Thomas and James take a look to see how these two new hot hatches compare. 1. Affordable? Seriously? NOT. Dealers only get 1 Golf R and they are selling for $65,000. Total BS. I’ve discovered the real joy in getting a new vehicle is not to get hosed and pay as little as possible but in today’s market only the well off are able to enjoy cars like the Golf R. Vehicle makers have lost their way and are way too tilted to selling to the wealthy and not the masses. The rest of us don’t want to be in debt to enjoy a great vehicle so maybe VW will bring the $25,000 ID2 to the United States and be the “People’s Car” once again!

  2. Not sure why James is so enamored with the sunroof. They add weight to the top of the car, reduce headroom, require maintenance and worst of all, they leak. The 20th anniversary R doesn't have a sunroof, which is great.

  3. These cars cost almost exactly TWICE the Canadian price here in Italy, where people are lucky if they earn more than 1200€ a month

  4. 01:20 when these manufactures leave the exhaust pipe exposed in the back I call foul. incorporate it into the body.

  5. Many people say the Golf AHHH isn't as fun to drive. Pretty weird since it's way faster but that's cars for ya.

  6. biggest issue with the new Golf gti and r is that the previous model exists… That is its real competitor

  7. The latest model looks so lame! The 7 R looked way way better!

  8. My cousin got a nice GTI, he decided to be a fuckin loser and trashed it in a drunk driving accident. Thankfully it was a barricade and not another driver. Motherfucker would brag about getting home safely no matter how wasted he was. Haven't heard a peep about that in a while, Karma's a bitch eh?

  9. how come NOBODY talks about all the $$$$$ these need in repairs ??? these are a fun very short term ride , but as far as any long term ownership be prepared to spend lots of $$$$ keeping it going .

  10. 8:18 – "The exhaust is really loud – it does pops and bangs on the downshift…"
(vision of exhaust outlet, audio of mildly humming exhaust noise)
    Umm… what did I miss here / mis-hear?
(🤔 misheard my herd of horse-powers?)

  11. I love Volkswagen golfs, I own a mk6. I will never buy anything with those infernal touch buttons.

  12. I love your honest reviews, wish you could do some tests of European cars that are not avaiable in NA. I couldn't find a single EU car channel that gives so much information about actual feeling of a car. Everyone just say "nice materials, nice ride, pretty fast" the meh information. Also, both of you are funny and down to earth 😉

  13. My wife works in media so I got to drive the GTI with DSG at the launch here in South Africa. Comfy, great acceleration, and loads of tec, but misses "the fizz". Also, hella expensive here

  14. Thomas it's not nice to make fun of James' accent. You what having an accent is all aboot.

  15. How disgusting this Generation of the Golf is locking, especially the "R" Version OMG
I am German so I can say "Pfui"!

  16. I personally can't wait for VW to put a boosted version of the eTSI motor into the GTI. That'll really help it get off the line a lot quicker.

  17. Should've raced them. Missed opportunity. We all know how it would've gone, but it's still interesting. Anyway, other than that, good review.

  18. How important is the DCC on the GTI? Does it help a lot with ride comfort on rough roads? Does anyone have experience?

  19. i LOVE my 2018 mk7.5 GTI SE. It is in White Silver Metallic and has the plaid seats! I love it! It was the only model year that had the upgraded SE model with optional plaid seats instead of leather. This is the best car I have ever owned (besides my track toy miata). MK7.5 is going to go down as one of the best ever

  20. These cars look so good in person. The one thing though, that strip light in front, looks after aftermarket or just poorly done vs the normal headlights at night. The main headlights are crystal clear vs that strip.

  21. Good review. I’m loving my 8 GTI. And I actually really like the interface.

One thing reviewers haven’t mentioned is how good the GTI is at city traffic using the adaptive cruz control. Super good & seamless
