  1. Good honest take. I think you are comparing too much to majors though. I get it, there is no history yet but it's hard to have history in your 2nd year. I think the best way to look at it is that LIV is not trying to be the PGA, it's trying to create something new that will stand on it's own as a fun yet competitive event. Something not so stuffy and rigid as the normal golf scene. It doesn't have to be the PGA to be good.

  2. Your last point about it not meaning anything was interesting. However, may I ask if the PGA Tour event, DP World Tour Event or even the US Women's Open event meant anything to you? I suspect they didn't either.

  3. Only really watch highlights as I live In Queensland Australia. Calibre seems higher at Liv. I think the atmosphere is elevating the play, or maybe it just seems like it cos the whole package is more hyped. Don't really care about fuddy daddy old man golf traditions, all due respect, but old boys club traditions are all but past their use by date.

  4. Rick, that was a fantastic assessment of the tournament. Only thing I think you’re missing on is from the perspective of a fan who has been watching now for a year. Personally, I think it does mean something as to who wins and I think the teams are more involved and excited than you may think. But I understand how it may only appear that the four or five top teams who are actually in contention for into the whole team aspect of things. Otherwise I 100% agree with you. And thank you.

  5. I loved the LIV London event. No tour events make golf as accessible to every person, they all take themselves far too seriously. The facilities at LIV make it a fun day for all ages. I took my 12 year old daughter for her first golf event and she absolutely loved it, I do not believe she would have had the same experience at some stuffy tour event. The timing of the event makes it so much easier to see all the stars and they are more accessible to fans. The number of players is much more interesting than tour events as probably 90% of the 100+ players you speak about at the tour events are not anyone you care about seeing or having the opportunity to engage with. With regards to the gaps in play, you chose the hole you want to start on based on where they start from and you don't have many gaps at all. You move between holes based on which players you want to see and interact with and it is much easier to follow the players that are interesting to you. I only had three complaints at the end of the day – 1. The handling of the following crowd on the 18th for the leading group with Cam was poor – we were herded into a dead-end with a massive crush of people (it created a panic for my daughter) and it took us about 30 minutes to be able to move out of the area after Cam's winning putt. 2. As others have mentioned the management of the parking exit at the end of the day was a complete shambles. 3. They do not cater for women and girls in the merchandise store (other than a big shoutout to Bubba Watson and the rangegoats). It was golf, but not boring and staid.

  6. As for Michelle Wie, has there ever been a golfer, male or female, whose body let them down more?

  7. What a moaner you are. This product is still in it baby stages. It will develop. Choice of courses will widen and therefore practise grounds will become better. The PGA tour was not that great to begin with. Stop moaning and get a life.

  8. I have been to both LIV London events and really enjoyed them. Admittedly I haven't been to a more traditional tournament, but I find this format more appealing.

The shotgun start is great. Can turn up at a reasonable time without missing any golf. And 4-5 hours of play is enough, I would not want to be on the course from dawn till dusk.

Sure there could be a few more players but I didn't' see this as much of an issue. What stood out more was the strong field of players that were there.

  9. The reason the players aren't bothered by all the hoopla while they're trying to play is because there's nothing riding on it. They've already got all their money.

  10. “My co host Guy was unfortunately hit…” got me scared there with your wording there Rick

  11. I think with each event to "not meaning anything" is similar to that of each Race in a F1 Season. Overall are we really bothered each week which racer wins? It only starts to get exciting/matter towards the end of the season as it begins to develop and we start to get a picture of who's going to be battling for #1. We are just over half way in the LIV season with Cam Smith, Taylor Gooch both neck and neck in the standings, for me it's going to be exciting to see where those two end up!

  12. I love the team element of Liv golf and think it’s great to watch. When you say it doesn’t mean anything well what does a pga tour event mean 🤷‍♂️ I definitely think Liv are on to a winner 👍 I for one am a big fan of it

  13. I went on Sunday with a friend and his two kids. Got to give it to Phil Mickelson, he loved my friends daughters high flyers shirt and when he finished his round came over and asked her a bunch of questions. Ended up giving her his worn glove signed, as well as signing her shirt, getting a photo and also ended up giving both kids a ball each. For a guy worth the amount of money that he has, he didn’t have to do all that, but showed real class in doing so

  14. Its a bit harsh to compare LIV to the tournaments that you list, Masters, Opens, etc. You should be comparing it to regular PGA tour events, not the top 10%.

  15. Interesting and excellent review. Haven’t been, but hoping to attend one just to see how different it is…As for your last point, I think you hit the nail on the head with the comment, “there’s no history yet.” That would be true with any sport. Only time can create that. When the FEDEX playoffs first started, no one had a clue what it meant, how it worked, or really cared what was going on…it was so new. Same thing in NASCAR with the playoffs…I think they should tweak the entire product a bit to really distinguish it from the PGA and other tours. Keep the 3 days and the team concept. Day 1 consists o team events: Long drive, Chip/putt, accuracy tests, one club challenge, etc…event oriented with points going towards the team. Then, the next two days should be more like a Ryder Cup…4 ball, alternate shot, etc…day 3 would be stroke play. If there’s a tie, playoff system utilizing some of the team challenge events…institute a strict shot clock with a big screen at the tee box and green so everyone can see it…the goal is to bring in new fans, so why play stroke play for 3 days? Not different enough.

  16. This was a really cool take to hear. I think I might check out the event schedule and see if there's a tourny coming my way.

  17. Rick, you do need to come visit Australia and see how good our golf courses are. Happy to be your tour guide 🏌🏻‍♂️🏌🏻‍♂️🏌🏻‍♂️🏌🏻‍♂️🏌🏻‍♂️

  18. I have seen gaps of play at normal PGA tour stops. Also, when they have a large field, over half of the field you are not familiar with. Plus to your point Rick, to see 120 players, you have to spend the entire day at the tournament. Long day. I think the concept of LIV is a better viewing atmosphere to see the players you care to see.

  19. Really enjoyed this week’s podcast great topic and I am glad you went., i’m on the fence I don’t care either way I kinda wish that the USA lost its grip on golf and there was 1 big world tour. 4 majors still 1. The Open 2. The US Open 3. Asia Open and 4. ?? But NOT the Masters

  20. Majestics will because it's all or nothing for them or they are done.

  21. I dunno i kinda like early starts when i visit european golf events because that means i got to follow two top star golfers, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

  22. Rick, I enjoyed your commentary. I like watching LIV. It’s new and I believe will get better with time and adding more players. It attracts new people to the game of golf. Probably those that enjoy the day with friends and sport. The highly competitive enthusiast will probably not be drawn in.

  23. It will eventually be fomula one, team nike, team taylor made etc

  24. I can't believe Rick has never been to a PGA event! That was the biggest mind blow for me in this episode.

  25. When LIV was first mooted, I thought the same as you do now. Later I started to think that this was golf's start similar to one day cricket back in the late 70's when Kerry Packer decided to make cricket more exciting with the colourful uniforms and 50 overs a side, the cricket establishment hated it. Years later it became hugely popular much like the 20 20 is now . For the purists like me tests are still the best, much like normal golf or major tournaments now. That doesn't lessen golf in my view but it will attract more viewers/spectators that perhaps less interest in golf. Golf is was mainly considered an elitist old man's sport and more than less main stream, this new product should attract new interest. It has no history as you stated but it's only been alive for the last 18 or so months. Give it the benefit of the doubt and see where it all goes . Here is Australia it was well embraced in Adelaide (mainly because we are these days starved of the worlds elite playing on our shores, tyranny of distance, relative small prize pools etc). However given the latest "truce" between the PGA Tour and the DP world tour, who knows what will happen…

  26. Mate great insights but you are at times comparing this to a major not a standard pga/do world comp. Yes majors are bigger and better and we all follow those events more then the round the mill competitions. I think you are comparing apples and bananas.
