There’s A Golf Club In My Bag That ISN’T WORKING!

There’s A Golf Club In My Bag That ISN’T WORKING! When choosing the make up for your golf clubs it’s important to think about what the best golf clubs of 2023 could be for you. Often for some golfers that means the most forgiving golf clubs, the best new golf clubs or even the longest golf clubs of 2023… but at the top end of your golf bag you have to ask yourself the question. Should you use a hybrid? A driving iron? A 5 wood or even a forgiving fairway wood? Let’s find out… and let’s do it now

  1. I have an 18' cobra utility and a 16' adamy hybrid which I swap out depending on the course.

Currently bagging the 18' in Cape Town winter as it's less windy here now and it lands softer and is easier to hit a high cut. I'm a fan of both and play both depending on the weather and course

  2. I’ve tried many hybrids and I suck with them. The more I try them and hit crappy shots, the less confidence I have in them, which means they get sold.
My father in law has the TM Stealth hybrid and he says that’s his favorite club in the bag.

  3. I've recently gone through this exact issue. I went with a driving iron due to dispersion differences. I hit the hybrid further and higher consistently but my misses with hybrid were off target line much more than with the driving iron. For me it came down to which one was going to stay in play for me more.

  4. I would go with a hybrid for forgiveness . I’ve also been using mine for punch shots and they work famously

  5. I was leaning towards ditching hybrids as I didn’t really enjoy the Callaway Mavrik and Apex i had tried. Liked my P790 2-iron but lacked forgiveness. I’ve had a Stealth 1 Plus 3H a while now and love it. Much more forgiving and fun shaping shots and easier to hit from rough. Great stingers under trees too.
My 3H replaces a 5-wood but I also carry a 7-wood for the higher shot profile and steep drop angle.
There’s a place for both in my bag. But the 2-iron will be going up for sale.

  6. James, it’s hybrid all day mate. They are so versatile cos you can play them fairly low and if you need some height it can still be done. Tough to manufacture a soft landing with the driving iron – It’s just too one-dimensional. And given you are a Mizuno iron player, you gotta take a look at the CLK hybrids. They are very adjustable like the Stealth and they feel amazing. I play an older CLK 2H with standard loft at 16 degrees instead of a 3wood for low penetrating flights under the wind. Shorter shaft helps with strike for me but still carries about 250 yards. I complement that with an 18 degree 5 wood that carries about 225 yards and sits down softly on the green (can even spin it backwards if I hit a high one and the greens are really soft). Great combination that has stayed in my bag for about 2 years now. Cheers

  7. I’ve been using srixon zx5 3 iron for 2 years now and just bought a ping g430 hybrid it’s a little easier to hit

  8. Doesn’t the ability of the player to move the ball determine what club is most appropriate. My ability and age at this point means I use hybrids for control and distance. You’re right the ability to adjust means for than most people realize.

  9. I am one who has always played 3 iron to LW and just had a driver and 3 wood. That could be why I am still a 10 handicapper..LOL
But if I am to give my honest opinion I do like the versatility of the hybrid and the forgiveness. But my question is this, are there potentially other driving irons that have more forgiveness. I believe I would look into that first before deciding on just those two clubs.

  10. I think I am a bit weird in that I binned my 3 wood as I find it simply too difficult to consistently hit it off the deck and with a healthy driver that behaves it did not provide any benefit off the tee. It was an easy decision as I actually use a 2 Hybrid off the deck and if required off the tee and I found it much easier to utilise in a variety of situations and being confident it was almost as good as an average 3 wood anyway.

Now the weird bit, my course is exceptionally windy, in fact when there is little wind we all get confused what to hit (rathe trhan the other way around). As I luckily have a good swing speed and love hitting irons it made sense to try a driving iron type club and boy did I try them all. In the end I went for the Ping iCrossover because of the adjustability as being Robinson Munchkinesque in frame I could set it to be flatter and suit my swing plane. Best decision I made as I can now swing easy and also with a better flight for windy golf both on and off the tee.

Word of advice don't be fooled by marketing or what your colleagues tell you, find the time to try clubs out whether it be utility clubs, hybrids, heaven woods etc and use the range technology to look at the carry, loft, descent and height and pick what will work for you week in week out. Gone are the days where you had to second guess or rely on a 'pro' who may or may not be incentivised to shift certain lines of stock. You can now determine for yourself what feels good and what it delivers in numbers.

  11. I have a 7W and 4 hybrid that I use a lot. Just depends on the wind conditions. The 4 hybrid launches lower than the 7W.

  12. I never could get along with any hybrid, was never ever able to prevent it from hooking. Titleist U510 #4 utility has fixed it : this club is by far one that leaves me the most confident, as it just cannot throw the ball anywhere else than straight ! Pure magic, especially for a terrible ball striker like me ! (18 handicap)

  13. Hey James great question for me I’ve gone Hybrid because I have difficulties with the lower irons. I’d be a mess with a driving or utility iron , playing a Stealth 2 and 3 hybrids and loving them still need to be more consistent with them. I would believe that a Hybrid would work better for high handicaps ( 16 ) like myself as there just easier to hit and carry down the fairways even on miss hits Thanks for the great videos. Btw it was great seeing Foxie. Yesterday

  14. Taking a driving iron or a Hybrid on par 5s and long par 4s is ok for younger stronger people?? what about a quite fit 80 year old who hits driver around 20 to 210 yards?? Who does not want to hit driver on a couple of holes on my course as they are too tight for driver. Hitting a hybrid or a 5 iron will not get the length I require???

  15. 7 wood for me, though I am looking at a hybrid with a bit more loft for long shots out of the rough. Just the nature of my game😊

  16. I would go for hybrid great out of the rough where a driving iron wouldnt be able to depending on the lie even hybrid you would be more confident on the fairway
