So last week, I made that wonderful trip out to Reno to put my best yet mediocre effort out there and see how I could do. For context, my 27 game average was 197 going into this, my 7th consecutive year, with my best year being in 2021 where I had 1788 for my all events. Simply put, I haven’t really ever had any stellar performances, and I’ve certainly had more 500 series than I have 600.
I brought the 6 balls I thought would work the best specifically for my game which I’ll get into later, bowled one squad of the bowlers journal and the team practice session before our regular events.
I tell you all of this to give you a couple pieces of advice. The first we already went over in that the team pattern is not hard, and should not be overthought. Just find the one that strikes and make your adjustments as you go along. The second is the bowlers journal is substantially different than minors. Because they only put out the minors pattern for the BJ and they do both for the tournament lanes, the actual doubles event plays way, way flatter, so be ready to execute good shots.
For bowling balls, I think my 6 were actually pretty close. I didn’t bring or use much surface, but that worked because I don’t have much tilt. I think a good 6 bowling balls have weaker covers overall with a variety of cores. The more tilt you have, the more asymmetry seems to work on both patterns. Getting the best shape on hard stuff like this is imperative on your ball slowing down in the right spot, but I think most of that should be dictated by the core of your ball, not the cover which is a unique thing this year.
For what I would have done different, it’s hard to say. I liked my looked for all but the first 15-20 frames of doubles where I just didn’t know what to do. I think for many, urethane is the right play until its not. I think for higher ball speed players a strong symmetrical solid with a bit of surface would look good also. For me, the one I wish I had at that moment was the black venom or the Envy Tour. Strong cover but less core than the DNA. Still asymmetric so you know it’ll go forward off the end of the pattern when you throw it correctly.
So for my FINAL recommendations, here’s what I’ve got.
Bring your spare ball.
Bring a high RG strong Pearl
Bring a strong pearl or shiny hybrid asym
Bring a slightly asymmetric solid
Bring a weak pearl, preferably low RG
And lastly, bring your favorite ball.

Best Nationals video to date.
It was great bowling with you at the journal as well. Also not the one who shot 260.
Wasn't originally gonna bring my Venom Shock but I did anyways and gave me my beat OCs performance to date. 658 with a 266 game 1 start 😂
What a pleasant surprise
High RG Pearl? Like a fate or revenant?
Spot on assessment of lane play.
As usual you knocked out of the park. Automatic thumbs up!
Well done Ben, I also found out this year that my symmetrical pearl balls worked better. (Phase V pin down, DV8 Captiv8). Good luck to all.
I Bowl in Reno May 18-19. Originally had thoughts on DNA, Reality Check Pin Down, Wolverine Dark Moss, Burner Pearl, Zen U Pin Down & Mix.
Now may make changes. Either the DNA still or a Pin Up Reality Check, Sunstorm, Renevant, Either a Hustle RAP or Burner Pearl, Zen U Pin Down & Mix. Will decide after league on the Thursday before I fly up.
I struggled with execution, again, this year. If I had it to do all over again, I would have used less surface in Teams.
What weight do you throw?
Heading out may 19th
From what i heard for team i have a gem and reality and halo pearl
Singles and doubles
Halo pearl jackal flash and i was going to shine up the reality
great assessment. i bowled 4 wks ago. team is longer around 49, and s/d is around 45. and hitting youre spot is the key ie 2nd arrow. not sure if they changed the patterns after i bowled. good luck and have fun
Thank you for this post!!!!!!!👍👍👍
Im heading out next Thursday. Im bringing Phaze II, Gem, Revenant, Eternity, Hustle Wine and Fate. Advice
Great video. It gave me insight for when I head to Reno in July. I have several pearls such as: Eternity (PD), Zen (PU), Fate (PD), and IQ Ruby (PD). Forge Flare (PU) as my solid, and Blue Coral Venom (PU) as a Hybrid. I do have a Purple Tank which I am still new to using Urethane.. Plus my spare ball. I'm only taking 6 bowling balls.. The 5 that I am considering as of now: Flare, Eternity, Blue Coral Venom, IQ Ruby and spare ball Any suggestions on the last ball to take.
This shot sucks
Funny. I found the Bowlerd journal way more difficult than the actual singles and doubles.
Team 669
Doubles 656
Singles 670
Threw the DNA all of team and doubles then IQ for singles
Felt like I left a bunch out there.
What do you think of polish urethane ball for nationals?
How high RG Pearl we talking ? Revenant or HUSTLE wine?
