  1. A 'Professional Tournament' golf ball that would travel a maximum 250 yards (in the air) but only when the club head speed exceeds 120, I'd be ok with that.

  2. These numbers for club golfers…was this carry or did they include roll out?

  3. The average drive on the PGA Tour from 1983 to present increased by 40 yards. Golf used to be a game for middle sized people. Golfers have become bigger and much stronger. It is not all technology. In 1983 as a 20 something, I hit my wooden driver about 260. I was a big guy and a fairly big hitter. I could reach back and get a bit more but that was the distance a good repeatable swing would go. I could hit my 1 iron about 240 and it would be in the fairway more often so I hit it off the tee quite a lot. With today's ball (40 years later) I hit that same 1 iron 230 when I pure it. I hit my driver 260 when I hit is well on a fast course. I hit my 4 wood about 240 and in the fairway. I hit a lot of 4 woods off the tee. What the ball and equipment have done is make my 60 year old self similar to my 20 year old self. My son hits it 320 plus with driver. This is great when he is hitting is straight. If he is a little off, it tends to hurt him more than it helps him. Why would any of this need to change.

Ben Hogan and Sam Snead were better ball strikers than the current crop. Sometimes I bring my old Hogan Apex II one iron to the course and have a one iron hitting contest off the tee on a hole if play is a bit slow in front of us. I am usually playing with younger guys who have never hit a 1980s or prior golf club or not often. They have a very difficult time hitting it in the sweet spot. They are very used to significant misses going a long way and feeling pretty good. My one iron stings a bit if you hit it anywhere except the fairly small sweet spot.

  4. The ball roll back is total BS. Why does it matter how far professionals hit it? They all still have to play the same course under the same conditions etc., so why bother? It seems the PGA and R&A are doing everything they can to kill the game!!!

  5. You say “absolutely ridiculous” hitting a 7 and having to go to a 5 with a roll back ball but it’s just a number on the bottom of the club, remember the lofts have changed over the years..

What is a 7 iron loft today wasn’t a 7 iron loft years ago..

  6. My longest flat no wind drive was in 1998 and was 374yds with a 6 degree Orlimar TriMetal with a Dunlap DDH ball and my avg good drive was 350yds. Last week I hit 419yds downhill with a tailwind using Krank 6.5 degree and Titlist Pro V1 though my normal good drives are in the 330's now. In the 90's I was 20 and leg pressing over 2200lbs and now I can still leg press over 1000lbs but I'm not sure there's been a big jump in the equipment distance as much as there has been in forgiveness. I feel like the older Dunlap DDH ball is still longer than the new Titlist Pro V1 it's just hard as a rock and has no feel around the greens like a Pro V1. This may also backfire on them making a ball that hurts players that swing in the 100mph range or whatever their target club speed is while benefiting those hitting above 115mph that can over compress the ball and get more spring out of it and more distance than those with the targeted club head speed. The whole ball roll back thing is just dumb.

  7. The main issue, as I see it, is the number of long hitters in the pro game, which make the current and a lot of older course unplayable for them.
The technological advances in balls and equipment have enabled older players the opportunity to keep competitive.
The rollback discussions do not make any difference to me, as I believe the pros play a different game to high handicappers.
One interesting point about the length of courses was the carnage the 87-yard par 3 caused at the US Open.
