How I gained 20 yards of carry in one incredible golf lesson

In this week’s video, I took a golf lesson with Zach Berhow that resulted in gaining a ton of speed. The original intent of the lesson was to calibrate the swing, but after finding speed from a complete turn in the backswing, Zach pushed me to swing the club faster. The results were pretty incredible.

  1. I love your rapport with Zach. The most valuable lesson I've learned watching these videos is to speak up and tell the instructor when you're concerned that doing what they say will lead to bad habits. Often times instructors are getting you to feel extremes so you can find the middle but you may not understand that as a student. For example years ago, I was using my arms too much and not rotating my body so my swing coach had me set my wrists and arms early and rotate through using the legs and body to release the club. After doing that for months, I was holding on too much and not allowing my arms to rotate at all. I was so confused and it took me a long time to realize that there is a middle ground. I've noticed in a couple videos you tell Zach that you're scared what he is telling you to do will get the right shoulder rotating too early causing the right to left swing path to return. He's demonstrated how it won't if you do it the right way. I know this will save you so much time and headache down the road. Thanks for the great videos.

  2. Great video, Zach is an excellent teacher of this complex game by making it simple with key instructions. thank you I picked up on my number one cheat of moving arms and not turning shoulder. It really makes a difference especially at my age (63)….

  3. I'm not sure if you realize what you really learned in that lesson, so let me add my 2 cents that may open your eye's to at least two components of your swing you just unlocked.

    1) Everyone talks about "width" in the back-swing, but they never tell you that width without "Depth" is only half the equation; Left shoulder over right knee WITHOUT folding lead arm across the chest is what produces DEPTH, which in turn produces better hand speed (earlier in the transition), hand path, club path, attack angle, which also makes you (me and every amateur golfer) "Rotate" more from the torso. With rotating the arms take over and power is lost and so is consistency, i.e. its harder to reproduce the same shot over and over with predictable results.
    2) ROTATION, ROTATION ROTATION; you appear to have been rotating pretty good before, but now you don't have to use your hands to square the club-face with your hands but rather you can now (most likely) FEEL the trail arm following a more natural club path with a more full (trail arm) extension at impact.

I'm curious what your feeling with your hands when the club is parallel to ground/target line – does it FEEL more "Palm Down" through impact instead of a forced rotation with your hands ?
It should (IMHO) – this is something that Mike Malaska teaches and I have had great success with that kind of release than I ever did with trying to roll my hands over at impact (almost impossible to get the timing right on a consistent basis with that kind of release) I have experienced exceptional yardage gains and more consistent shot making capabilities since I incorporated that into my release.
You also mention during your session that you felt like you were releasing earlier in the down swing, although I might have misinterpreted your statement – I have been studying Mike Austin's swing and his protege Mike Dunaway for a few years and I've found that same technique was used by both (flection rather than rolling over) and they were both the longest and most accurate in the history of golf – Mike Austin still holds the record for the longest drive in a tournament; 512 Yards and Dunaway was a World Long Drive Champion.
One other thing I might mention is: what Zach was teaching you about rolling over your trail arm almost automatically produces a "Shallowing Effect" without feeling like its some that requires a conscience effort or a "swing thought" to produce – I like AUTOMATIC LOL – any natural body movements that produce the results I want without effort will always produce desired results; this is what Mike Austin described as "supple quickness" rather than "rigid slowness".

Keep up the good work and, if you haven't already, take a look at Mike Milaska's channel and learn the principle of the release I mentioned above, I think it will serve you well in the long term.
I'm on the same journey myself so its interesting to watch someone else make the same discoveries and advancements that I've made and still making lol

  4. Six months ago: “It finally clicked!” Today: “It finally clicked!” Golf in a nutshell. 😅

  5. Loving the progress 👍 well done keep it up! Rolling the forearms to close the face …. Exactly what I was working on in my last lesson! Weird 😂

  6. My turn got significantly better when I swapped to contacts – I found my frames were limiting my turn because I couldn’t see the ball. I notice a lot of pga pros wear glasses but they are the sporty type that kind of wrap around the eyes

  7. i am slightly confused by this lesson. I was always told by multiple coaches some tour level to never to push off with back foot because that isn't actually transferring your weight that's actually putting all your weight on your back foot, and to never square the face using your forearm because as you get tired your ability to square the face worsens drastically where if you do the proper grip with slight wrist bend even when your tired you can square the face easily. Also with the wrist bend there is no timing at all u set your wrist and you are good, but with your forearm especially at faster swing speed you have to time it so well for it to work.

  8. I played 9 holes last night with a swing change , i didnt score 3 holes (stableford) but got 17 points for the 6 holes i did score on. I can't rotate as well as you but trying something similar to you. Stick with it.

  9. It's obvious that you have a high IQ when it comes to all of this, and I'm thankful for the technical breakdowns. You and your coach seem to have a great dynamic, and you understand each other. I almost feel as if I owe both of y'all some money lol. Really appreciate the work you're putting in to document and help us all out. May the views pay for all your lessons one day!

  10. Hello Erndog, I am new to your channel. I am also relatively new to the game of golf. I really like this video, it gives concrete details of the swing. Which is my biggest concern. I would like to take a lesson with Zach, unfortunately, I live in California. I would like some help with my game and it has been difficult finding an instructor that I can understand. I'll check out your other videos. Thank you.

  11. That lil kick you do after the swing 😂🏌🏽‍♂️🏌🏽‍♂️🏌🏽‍♂️🏌🏽‍♂️

  12. Another great video! Everything I have seen in your lessons with Zach has directly translated to better playing for me. Any chance of a lesson on the 3 wood coming??

  13. Great lesson. My back honestly been so stiff lately. Been working like a fucking dog on my game past year lol so taking a little break but that left shoulder over the right knee hits home. Like you and him were saying it really eliminates the possibility of coming over the top and promotes you to come more inside and on top of that higher speeds. Can’t wait to work on this when I’m at the range. Thank you for this video. 🙏🏼

  14. Massive gainzzz.. good work dude ! I need some of that in my life …. Gonna work on this.

  15. What an awesome lesson, wish I could make my way out to TX to get a lesson like this. I have been struggling with my turn too, getting pinned is death to a swing. Using the forearms is an eye opener, I was trying to use my hands too. Keep it up!

  16. The way you are presenting your content is really great for high handicappers like myself. Keep doing you mate, appreciating you sharing Zachs words of wisdom!

  17. This is great.. Makes me want to get lessons.. If your free during the week, I live in DFW area as well… Lets go play around!
