  1. Didn't watch it, but I sure saw the scores. My god that's not what I expected. The guy seemed almost combative about it. Were fans really complaining about this that much?

  2. This sounds crazy but I wonder if the USGA set up this US open to show that they finally have reasoning to roll the golf ball back so they can't hit it as far🤷

  3. It's June in LA. Ofc there is marine layer. They get June gloom every year.
The fairways might be too wide on this course for a US Open. So far it doesn't look that impressive on tv.

  4. The score is not of primary importance….the strength of the leaderboard is the true indicator of the course

  5. Rory hit a wedge into a 529 yard par 4, so lengthening courses doesn't work. The issue is that at 300 yards the fairways are wide enough to land a 747 and are running at a 12 stimp so you can get 40 yards of run out and still be in the fairway. Also the rough has not been particularly penalizing and on many holes you can run it onto the greens. And lastly, as Brandel pointed out, on old golf courses where the green complexes were designed around a green speed of 7 stimp, you have limited pin locations so maybe slow them down a touch and then tuck the pins so that you not only have to be on the fairway, but also the correct side of the fairway to access the pin location.

  6. I grew up in Michigan and went to the Buick open every year. The Buick, Warwick hills, was the easiest venue for scoring on the tour. Having said that, I never saw anyone shoot 62 there

  7. Say what you want about Brandel the man knows golf. Excellent questions, took this guy to task, and rightly so.

  8. I dont see why its such a big deal, these players are awesome and i for 1 dont mind seeing them once in a while smash the course

  9. The USGA had a plan, and they should stick to it …… 62 was a good score to be honest, I think Xander will win by 3 shots !!!

  10. I thought I was watching the Valero Texas open. The width of the fairways is just crazy.

  11. The course may seem more like a house of horrors to players in the 2nd round, IF the USGA can get the elements to cooperate.

  12. Let's see what they do to toughen up the course.Longer par threes, difficult pin placements, cut the greens extremely short.

  13. Everyone’s having a whinge 😂😂😢😢 about the score. Enjoy the golf and relax.

  14. PGA should be ashamed of setting up a us open course like this
    What a joke
One time a year you can bring these golfing divas to their knees and you do this
    Must be a LIV thing

  15. literally the easiest us open round ever. less than half as many fans allowed. this is only about money and networking. california is the only state where the public courses are better than the "elite" ones

  16. Brandel could do with being less prickish, he's a privileged spectator and should curb himself

  17. I enjoy all three of the commentators but you could tell they were trying to force a defensive response out of John, and he just didn't take the bait. I get why they are ruffled. All the pre-tournament hype was about the course and what a stern test it would be, and on Thursday it wasn't. TV needs drama, and a US Open with a winning score of 20 under will not provide that.

  18. It's not rocket science…. Shorten the fairways. 400yd hole. 260yd of fairway (tapered) to tapering rough leading up to green… These types of design can control distance off the tee.

  19. Us open has sucked since shinnecock. Quit watering so much. All 4 rounds should be hard and dry with the 4 hardest pin locations. PGA championship is now golf’s toughest test

  20. The bottom line is that the winning score for a U.S. Open should always be hovering around par.

  21. Brandel's 100% right re: "angles." The play for the best in the world is to hit it as far down as possible, thus making "angles" into greens irrelevant. Being 150 yards out from a worse angle is still noticeably better than being 200 yards out from the best. This is true regardless of firmness.

Deep rough, bunkering, water hazards, etc. are what make the course tougher. While LACC doesn't have much by way of water hazards, it can produce deep rough if set up correctly. Fairways don't need to be as narrow as in years past, but they shouldn't be wider than an average PGA Tour event. The stat being produced is that 66% of tee shots hit a fairway, contrasting the 58% of a normal Tour event. This can't happen. Erin Hills proved this.

Bodenhammer and others in the current regime at the USGA need to go. Get someone who will commit to making the Open the toughest test in golf again, one where pars require good shots to accomplish and bogeys or worse can be had by being slightly off. The championship has lost its psychological edge, one which used to move players to the limit.

  22. You can’t do anything about 43 yard wide fairways. LACC has no business hosting a major.

  23. How is that the PGA of America ALWAYS have a proper setup for the PGA championship and Ryder Cup….? But the USGA???

  24. What a massive fuck up, usga made a horrible set up especially for the lack of fans in attendance

  25. I love how upset these guys get over this. It’s like they take it personally or something.
