Each champion of the Travelers Championship since 2016 teed it up at the U.S. Open the week before. This year’s U.S. Open entrants will fly across the country from Los Angeles to Connecticut, including Schauffele, the defending champion. Some young golfers are looking to make their mark this week as well, especially after Michael Thorbjornsen finished in fourth place last season. He won this year’s Pac-12 Championship and was the conference’s player of the year. Benjamin James, Sam Bennett and Ludvig Aberg are among Thorbjornsen’s peers in the field.

Power Rankings: Travelers Championship
That’s always easier written and said than done but guys don’t need to step on drivers this week. If undecided, perhaps respecting that TPC River Highlands annually ranks inside the toughest half of all courses in scrambling will tilt the balance. Its pair of par fives – Nos. 6 and 13 – are deceivingly challenging as a set as well, as they also are among the hardest sets among all courses. Bottom line, the vibe of central Connecticut as summer begins guarantees a timely soft landing after the stresses of last week.

Most of the PGA Tour’s top golfers will be back in action this week in Cromwell, Conn. for the 2023 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. The top eight players in the world, including defending champion Xander Schauffele — as well as newly-minted U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark — headline the 2023 Travelers Championship field. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (6-1) and Patrick Cantlay (9-1) are the favorites in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 Travelers Championship golf odds. Schauffele (12-1) is just behind Rory McIlroy (10-1) and Jon Rahm (10-1), while Clark is a 40-1 longshot.

Five things to know: TPC River Highlands
The last of the Bermuda Triangle holes is the 420-yard, par-4 17th. From an elevated tee, perched 25 feet above the fairway, players look out at a vast expanse of water down the entirety of the right side up flush against the fairway without any collar of rough. The hole forms a shepherd’s crook, with the green sitting on the far side of the water. Architects like Dye and Weed are smart enough students of golf psychiatry to know that players hate playing away from a tempting line, and if they overcompensate just slightly off the tee – where most will lay up with a rescue club or long iron – there’s the prospect of two yawning fairway bunkers ready to gobble up a wayward shot. The unbunkered green sits tight to the water’s edge up front. The green serves as a fitting endpoint to one of the PGA TOUR’s more memorable and photogenic stretches of golf holes. Not necessarily difficult; just fraught with potential for danger.

2023 Travelers Championship Odds, Predictions: Tommy Fleetwood, Tom Kim Highlight Early Bets
The course at TPC River Highlands sets up to be a much better fit for the former Georgia Bulldog. He’ll be able to take advantage of his accuracy off the tee and put himself in a spot to attack the greens. Henley has gained at least 2.9 shots on approach in each of his last five tournaments, and if he continues that this week, he could be in contention over the weekend.
