The PGA Tour has done a complete about-face by merging with rival LIV Golf less than one year after PGA commissioner Jay Monahan told reporters that such an arrangement was ‘off the table.’ In a shocking move that was unknown to PGA stars and LIV commissioner Greg Norman until Tuesday morning, the PGA and European Tours have signed an agreement with the Saudi-backed circuit to combine their businesses into a new, yet-to-be-named company. The merger ends the ongoing litigation between the rivals. Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Why would PIF (as a partner) want to fine their players in order for them to return? Without those players going to LIV they would have not had the leverage to force this result without them.

It was just a matter of time. All the talk from the PGA Commissioner about moral reasons, "working in the background over the past few months" They hung Rory out to dry as an "unofficial" spokesperson and wasting all his time with his golf "possibly suffering" You're definitely correct "Money Talks" I had a feeling that this would happen but not like this and after the statements made by the PGA up to very recently. A complete fiasco and Jay Monahan gets a promotions out of the whole scenario. Hard to take this, especially the PGA Tour Players who, it doesn't seem like, knew anything about it. However, Phil Mickelson has been making some noises over the last few weeks which seems to indicate that he knew something !!
The about face is because until now no one had offered Jay any money. He took it just like many others did.
What I hope to understand soon is why I keep hearing “will let them back in to the PGA” come up. I have not heard LIV is dissolving so why would they want back in? Does this imply they would hold dual membership (PGA & LIV)? It has been clarified that the leagues are not literally merging but a new top level Corp is being formed over them all. Also, if fines, as was mentioned here are enforced that makes no sense either to me. Hopefully we’ll get more info soon.

It is said that you either inform the participants in advance of your plan(s), and let them comment and/or you complete the plan(s) and let the participants talk about it. Clearly, the PGA Commissioner/Board opted for the second option..
Don't have any sympathy for Rory or any of the highest ranked players that backed the PGA, does anybody really believe if Rory was ranked between say the top 20 to 50 players in the PGA and was handed a a LIV contract he would have turned it down? No because he had the ability and the endorsements to make a fortune out of loyalty to the PGA he stayed. Let get one thing ABSOLUTE clear, the PGA stuffed up golf control, other wise ,no LIV, no DP, it was not the players, not the fans. Do I believe the PGA has rolled over for the good of golf , no this is a survival tactic, with hope of once again complete control,human nature. The good news ,the PGA will be dancing to some Rocking n Roll in the future,which should sort out the tired old ballroom dancers now controlling the music.
This is total BS, I can't believe the PGA Tour sold out. Unbelievable!!!!!! I never minded the LIV golf, it was just another league, but now the PGA has decided to sell out. Total BS. For those guys that were offered money and didn't take it, they should be compensated. There has to be more to this story? I am betting LIV found out some shit about the PGA tour in the court cases and LIV told them if they want it to go away, they have to merge. So crazy. my first reaction is to not watch any of it anymore. But that is easier said than done.

Did I misunderstand or did the Saudi Investemnt company P.I.F. just buy the PGA? Okay, maybe P.I.F just bought a controlling interest in the PGA?
After hearing additional context of the proposed merger, seems like a win-win situation for PGA although LIV players may get “PIF’d off” (pun intended). Appears that PIF wants to save face & to buy some time & buy a foothold in professional golf & be more of an investor in PGA. PIF may be bringing in $1 billion but as an investor, which could be used to compensate the PGA “loyal & honorable” players who stayed with PGA, in addition penalty fees could be assessed by new controlling entity (PGA) against LIV players to re-enter PGA and bonus money may not available to LIV players. PGA players will have to approve the requirements for LIV’s re-entry Into PGA. In respect to this info I applaud Jay Monahan. PGA will control the future of LIV Golf. PGA retains over-ship of the entity after merger. Jay Monahan would oversee LIV golf and can disband LIV. PGA Tour will be the dominant actor. Settlement technically no formal dismissal yet of the lawsuit with prejudice, but statements PIF/LIV has made in last weeks include a host of statements against its own litigation that can and will be used against LIV if they resurrect the lawsuit. PIF will participate as a mere investor if merger goes thru.
