Rod Brind’Amour On Officiating, Trade History and Winning in Carolina | 32 Thoughts Pop-Up Edition

The Carolina Hurricanes are a hard team to play thanks to their coach. Elliotte sat down with Rod Brind’Amour in Ottawa the day after his son, Skyler, won the Frozen Four with Quinnipiac. They talk about Skyler’s journey in hockey, the make up of the Canes, why he got into coaching, the Stanley Cup run in 2006, being part of some massive trades during his playing days, his relationship with owner Tom Dundon, the culture in Carolina and the changes he feels need to be made to officiating in the NHL to make it an even playing ground.

  1. The excitement in his voice when talking about his playing days shows he hast lost any love for the game at all. He loves it more today than he did yesterday and that's what you need in a coach.

  2. as a canes fan Rod saying he doesn't know how long he's going to coach freaked me out, but I'd love to see him take over as GM after Donny is done, and maybe then Tim Gleason could take over as coach

  3. Moved to Raleigh in 1997 the same year the Canes came to NC. Couldn't be more proud to call them my team.

  4. This is the coach & GM the leafs should be throwing that Babcock money 💰 they can throw Willy nilly at imho, been so consistent, plus if they did, he’d probably bring Slavin across get rid of JT which is just what we need, that and one of the most important positions we should also get Brodeaur, Roy or Hasek as a goalie coach to 1. pick the right starting netminder & 2 to develop backup Woll!

  5. He's friends with Nuge: Ryan Nugent -Hopkins. They run a charity golf tournament every summer in Campbell River, B.C.

  6. Growing up as a center my dad made me watch rod religiously for his faceoff abilities. I use to win very crucial faceoffs in big games due to him. He was a nasty goal scarer and had the speed

  7. Rod knows that Playing Your Positions and making sure some covers them is what get you the Cup. Canadian Teams hate positional hockey so they don't win the Cup.
Mathews, Nylander and Marner would make better Ice Capades Skaters than Playoff Hockey Players.
Then the Only Contact They have to put up with is Lifting a Pretty girl in the Air, that is More Their Style of Skating.

  8. Love Rod!!! Been the biggest fan of his since ‘92. The saddest day of my life was when he got traded but when I finally seen him raise the Cup and as the captain for the Hurricanes was the greatest ever. Cannot wait to see The Canes raise the Cup again with him at the helm. This man totally deserves to be in The Hockey Hall of Fame.

  9. Good for the Canes believing in their system and players they have even with the injuries. Didn't trade draft capital or prospects and hurt long term future at the deadline. All the teams that loaded up big time are eliminated already. Wish the Canucks could be ran like the Canes instead of being the worst run franchise in the league.

  10. Rod Brind'Amour is developing into a great coach, but he isn't 'one of the best' just yet. His current coaching record doesn't come close to supporting that, but this is just his 5th year. IMO, this is his best year yet. I'm amazed how the team has overcome so many key injuries and make it to the semis. Unbelievable how good they are playing without Svechnikov and Pacioretty. Losing those 2 would have crippled most teams. Brind'Amour spent most of his career as a minus player. I guess he changed his view when he started coaching because he has everyone buying into the 2-way game.

  11. I look forward to the statues that will be built in my city of this man. It’s an honor to have him lead our team.

  12. 1:20 You only get so many moments in life, that u create memories and be there for something so special Wow i really like that as i live my life in the moment

  13. Raleigh does not deserve Rod. This guy is effing fantastic. There a few programs which deserve a guy of his character, integrity, and class.

  14. Love this. Fortunate to see Rod interviewed 100x per year on local TV but I think EF is one of the best in his field so this was a great chance to see them together. Rod should be in the HOF and his changes for officiating make perfect sense.

  15. The NHL should be listening to this gent – was a great player and is now a great coach – Very Intelligent approach to the game and the refereeing – line call conversation is brilliant.

  16. This was a really good interview. Rod Brind'Amour is a such a great story teller and so down to earth. I like that he took the cup🏆away from Gary😂he was afraid his suggestion on the refs would get him in trouble 😂seriously thou the league should hear him out that was a good idea.😂 I 'm thinking he would make a really good GM for the leafs even as a coach but i can just see him sitting at the top next to Brendan Shanahan. Just saying.

  17. I remember when he played he was awsome and as a coach he is awsome. Such a awsome guy he is real and honest we need more people in this world like rod!

  18. I can't believe his team is losing to the crappy 8th seed wildcard team a terrible coach.

  19. Life long die hard Philadelphia Flyers fan. Rod Brind'Amour is my all-time favorite Flyer, all-time favorite hockey player of all time! My first Flyers jersey, when I was 9, was a Brind'Amour jersey. My 8 year old son currently has said jersey! I was 15 when Philly traded Rod to Carolina and I legit cried. I didn't cry but I did tear up when Rod and Carolina won the cup in 06'. Love this dude and love seeing him being successful as a coach. Now Hall of Fame voters pull your heads out of your butts and put Rod in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He freaking deserves it!

  20. my wife keeps telling me how everytime she sees Elliot how much his physiognomy indicates a lot of creepy darkness probably involving children
