Billy Horschel on PGA Tour struggles

Billy Horschel hit two greens in regulation Thursday at the Memorial Tournament – or as many times as he hit his ball in a single stroke during a miserable round that had the defending champion fighting back tears in the aftermath.

“As much as I would love to throw in the towel and not come out tomorrow, that’s just not in me. I’m just not one of those players. There’s plenty of those guys out here on Tour that would make an excuse about being injured and everything,” Horschel said. “But I’ll show up and I’ll go out there and give it my all like I always do and try and find something, try and play well, and move on. I mean, it’s a day and I’ve had plenty of these days this year.”

“Bay Hill (Arnold Palmer), after missing that cut, we had a discussion with Mark Horton, my stats guy, and Mark Fulcher, who was caddying for me. And it was a lively discussion for about 45 minutes in the parking lot. I went back to the room — I think even before I got back to the room, just in my car, just thinking about the discussion and thinking about where the game was and where I want to be and where I’m not at the moment.

“I think there’s a certain trust and chemistry that has to be established.  I think that’s where a lot of these young players that jump around to different coaches, they lose that continuity,” Anderson said. “If you start jumping around to a bunch of different coaches and they start messing up the foundation that’s made you great, that’s when you really get lost, when you lose the foundation of who you are as a player. Billy’s always stuck with me and always kind of believed in the process that we would go through to try to get him back on track.”

‘I broke down and I cried’: Pro gets emotional about recent struggles
“Bay Hill, after missing that cut, we had a discussion with Mark Horton, my stats guy, and Mark Fulcher, who was caddying for me,” he said. “And it was a lively discussion for about 45 minutes in the parking lot. I went back to the room — I think even before I got back to the room, just in my car, just thinking about the discussion and thinking about where the game was and where I want to be and where I’m not at the moment. I sort of just broke down a little bit. I broke down and I cried a little bit. I had tears.

Horschel puts those emotional moments down to his love for the game. He said: “This game means so much to me, and I love the game of golf, and I’m so passionate about it. Not just myself, but to get everyone, get other people involved and to see other people succeed. It’s just one of those things that the love I have for it that when you’re not getting what you want out of it sort of sucks a little bit.”
