The Good and Very Bad of Seahawks 4th Round Pick Cameron Young

The 2023 NFL Draft was a highly successful one for the Seahawks. A case could be made for value driving the day for nearly every player chosen by the Hawks. There has been one selection I’ve struggled with, and just can’t quite the see the value as much as others. Let’s break down the tape of 4th round pick Cameron Young, and I’ll show why I’m struggling to understand the pick.

  1. Wait, so you're a telling me it is tough hold up against double teams? 300lbs vs 630lbs? that is called physics. even the best NTs struggle with double teams. Also, MSU is a slant orientated D, sometimes you are giving him credit for reading and sometimes running himself out. Most of the time that is predetermined slants. Most analysis agrees that getting out of the constant slanting style D will benefit him greatly.

  2. Hawks game plan could be to get an early lead and playing with a lead which would make having an immobile NT a liability a NT who is more athletic will be more effective in todays pass happy NFL

IMO JS/PC don’t highly value IDL as much as other positions they can be found in mid-late rds, free agency and UDFA

  3. Young needs some work but he’s got potential, he’s just needs to add some pass rush moves to his arsenal and find a way for him to sink his feet and really anchor down the middle as well as getting lower he stood up every rep. Lower man wins!

  4. I don’t think they were pressured. I think they were planning on adding one on day 3. Get a high motor guy who you can teach. Better than getting a low motor guy and hoping they become high motor.

  5. I doubt Schneider feels any pressure from the media. CB, QB, WR, Edge; those are the positions most would consider valued for high picks. DT is not considered a position usually used on high draft picks.

  6. I think Pete and John are seeing what we can't at the moment due to them thinking they can coach him up. MSU coaching was abismal for defense and he probably didn't learn how to use his hands and leverage correctly. He has the power and instincts to be a good NT. But for year 1 we will probably see alot of inconsistencies.

  7. On some of these (bad) plays it appears he actually does good work occupying blockers. It looks as though #14 constanly chooses poorly behind him and gets himself caught in the wash. They appear to be 1 gapping on plays and 14 appears fill a gap that is already occupied ….

  8. Really appreciate the tape replays and the little "burst" to identify Young on the line, as well as the explanation on what is going on during the play. Most of us don't analyze tape, so having you point out what to look for is invaluable. GO HAWKS!

  9. well, that was an eyeopening experience that I didn't want to see =( Lets hope he's got a lot we haven't seen! Go Hawks!

  10. More than a few of those plays Young was in a slat. Which naturally took him out of the play. In the NFL unless you are one of the elite DT. And even then, it's a 50 50. You will not dominate centers in the NFL. So next time you show tape maybe look at it first.

  11. Definitely gonna be concerns with certain drafted players but the truth is that we have no idea what we truly got until the we get the eye test in preseason.

  12. The first “bad” play you showed he was moved one yard. I’d say the guy on his right and linebackers did more poorly than him.

  13. 3-3-5 defense requires a lot of slanting the Seahawks run a total different defense. Also at least 2 of those plays weren’t Cameron🤦🏾‍♂️

  14. Hey Brandon, Thanks for the video. I will, for the 2023 season, PROMISE to TRY not be too negative on Young. But wow, JSN, Hall, and Charbonnet…what I would give for Mazi, Benton, or even Ika instead of Young. The rest of the draft looks strong, but if Young turns into a waste my bourbon intake will be off the chart (teasing). Thanks again for the video, Go Hawks!!

  15. Great analysis as always. I liked the cam young pick as a developmental guy. He won’t light the world on fire but I think if we allow him to fail and give time to get bigger and stronger, I think we could see this pick pay off paying as soon as next year. Failure will be his biggest teacher I think. Also all of UNMs games were usually televised on FS2 and idk if they’ll still have up film if you trying to make a Jerrick Reed video. If not: hawks nest shorts 🤷‍♂️

  16. … I don't understand why we let AL Woods walk for $3.75 Million. That's pennies for one of the better nose tackles

  17. Your analysis seems to have more to do with how he was coached, rather than his physical attributes. You can coach him up on his technique, but you can't teach his athletic ability.
