RBC Canadian Open picks and odds

The U.S. Open isn’t until next week, but now’s the time to fire on one golfer who’s surging.

2023 RBC Canadian Open Odds, Picks: Best Course Fits Include Sam Burns, Sahith Theegala & Ludvig Aberg
Sahith Theegala is a player who’s seemed poised to break through for his first PGA Tour victory all season, and there’s some reason to believe this week’s RBC Canadian Open could be the right spot for his breakthrough. The former Haskins Award winner has done some of his best work on the PGA Tour on shorter courses, including at the Travelers, the RSM Classic and the Fortinet Championship.

Power Rankings: RBC Canadian Open
When it hosted the 18-hole sprint, Oakdale played as a par 71 stretching 7,333 yards. For the RBC Canadian Open, it’s a par 72 measuring 7,264 yards. (Only Angus Glen in 2002 and 2007 has tipped longer than Oakdale for this tournament.) The 18th hole will be a 496-yard par 5. A year ago, it was a 500-yard par 4 and averaged exactly one stroke over par. Overall, the course averaged 74.99 and Patrick Flavin medaled at 3-under 68. One of this week’s four-spotters, Drew Nesbitt, finished T12 at 1-over 72. Because par now is 72 and because the talent of this week’s tournament proper is stronger pound for pound, scoring will be much lower.

Rory McIlroy looks to add a third Canadian Open title to his résumé. Reigning supreme in 2019, the Northern Irishman successfully defended his crown last season as the Canadian Open returned to the PGA Tour playing calendar after a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. McIlroy comes off an indifferent Memorial Tournament that saw him enter the final round with a share of the lead only to backtrack and finish T7 to match his result at the 2023 PGA Championship.

PGA betting: Here’s an early buy in the outright market for the U.S. Open
Recovering from a bulging disk, Fitzpatrick is rounding back into form. Not only is he one of the top players off the tee but Fitz has a short game to accompany his ball-striking ability. He’s gained strokes with his irons in five straight tournaments and around the green in three of his last four. Even while struggling through injury, he excelled with the putter, gaining strokes in 10 of 14 tournaments this year. Not to mention that Bentgrass greens are one of his best surfaces. What’s promising is Fitzpatrick gained strokes in every category in two of his last four recorded tournaments — his RBC win and a T9 in the Memorial Tournament.
