Pete Cowen’s Transition Could Make Rory McIlroy Unbeatable AGAIN

►Team Rory McIlroy Pete Cowen needs to come back in order for Rory’s golf swing to hold up under pressure… in my opinion.

  1. I think Rory has one of the best swings currently in golf regardless of how he plays. Much of his recent "slump" is more in his head (as many tour golfers have personal issues with) and how he approaches his shots rather than his actual shot making ability. His distance control with his wedges seem to be similar to what Dustin Johnson had issues with many years ago, prior to changing to a fade with all his clubs and getting the #1 ranking. He now has them much more dialed in and except for his injuries, would have probably stayed on the PGA tour.

  2. Rory has to see with his current transition that it doesn’t work with wedges. But creating 2 different swings generally will not work on tour. It’s very tough to change your tempo from birth. He needs a little more of an quiet arms swing with wedges. So my answer is yes Pete would help but it will take Rory’s “buying in” to make it work.

  3. He should have won more majors, that's for sure.
The problem Rory faces is this, if for example, you struggle to win an Open Championship when it's held at St Andrew's then just wait until it's held somewhere else that suits your game. Rory's problem is the Masters will always be held at Augusta National and this will probably always be a monkey on his back preventing him from winning more majors.

  4. Andy, you do realize that people who aren't the tallest are actually very explosive and powerful? =P

  5. He is a streaky to average putter and his short game isn't elite. On standard tour event courses his all-world ballstriking can win. But, Tiger and Jack were lights out putters under pressure for instance. Koepka and Scheffler have it…

  6. It is a weird thing to say that with 4 majors he’s under achieved but the expectation is so high.. I do agree that Rory’s wedge game did improve when working with Pete in the last 18months but I like his putting it’s very streaky.. give Rory, Speiths, short game and he’d be in double figures of majors.. hopefully Hoylake for the Open Cahpionship will get him back in the Major podium..

  7. I also think that his wedge play is terrible more than its good. Due to his power and length he is only leaving himself a wedge when others are taking a short iron so is putting more pressure on himself to get it pure as others are more comfortable taking a full iron or a 3/4 9 iron. No used hitting massive drives if can't get second shot stiff.

  8. Rory has 4 majors and he should have won more. The problem is he now feels like hes trying to win his first majora again. I defend Rory all the time but I dont think he is naturally tough. He wins when he is playing great and is not great at fighting through a bad day

  9. LPGA player Yuko Sasso copied his swing. Perhaps he should watch tapes of her hitting short irons (she is much better).

  10. I do think our expectations are ridiculous. To hold anyone to “Tiger” expectations is ludicrous and I think that’s the standard we try to hold him to. He’s an incredible talent and we need to enjoy him for the golfer he is.

  11. Rory’s failures should be encouraging to recreational golfers. It just shows how fickle golf can be when someone of his caliber can struggle like the rest of us. To his credit he has been close to winning many tournaments when he has admittedly not had his A game. Thanks again for another informative video that we can all apply to our own improvement!

  12. Cant say I've watched any amount of golf in the last year or so , hence I cant really comment on Rory's current performance. My only comment would be, if Pete does indeed work well with him, Rory should stick with him.!
I personally think Rory has more majors to come…

  13. We’ve just been wrong in our expectations.

If he’s not figured it out by now he’s not suddenly going to become the Tiger level player we once thought he could be.
Whether that’s mechanical, mental or a combination of both we’ll never really know.

Sergio Garcia was the same. Unbelievable talent but just not quite at that stratospheric level that we thought he MIGHT be capable of.

  14. Man do I wish YouTube was around in my early golf years. I'm an old man wishing I could hit that little white ball further and straight. But now that I'm a senior golfer that's gone. Still trying though. I've never been a long hitter but straight and that's ok for us oldie but goodies. Thanks to you I have improved my strike some. Thanks again. Oh and McIlroy is a talent that needs to relax some.

  15. Haha, if I could be half as good as Rory I would be so happy. And now I'm going out to try your tips, thank you!

  16. Rory's worked with Cowan for periods since 2014 when he last won a major so I'm not sure it's a swing issue. Rory started to struggle after he left Chubby and then he left the 2nd management company and then he sacked JP. Now his team are all friends and family and I doubt any of them say no or challenge him. I think his biggest problem is himself, it seems to me nobody can tell him anything. He's not won a major since it was just friends and family. Do you remember the 1st tee of the Open at Portrush, he knobbed it OB left and then hit the same shot with ball 2 and it just stayed inside the ropes but was buried in a bush. It was the wrong shot with the wind. I'm not sure JP or any other top caddie would have let him hit the same shot again, let alone the first time. He needs someone to guide him around, he makes bad decisions in my opinion but it seems like he's not open to listening to different opinions to his own. He didn't win a match at the last Ryder Cup until it was lost, that's not a swing issue for me

  17. Seeing as you've spent so much time with Pete. A lesson with you is as close as im going to get to a lesson with Pete. Rory is my guy. Im an American and love that he goes about it the right way. He could be unbeatable if he gets back with Pete. Brad Faxon had him rolling the rock very well.
