The Backswing Mistake That KILLS Your Driver Distance

Creating width in the golf swing can be a challenge for many golfers, and the term is often misunderstood leading to common mistakes which cause issues with controlling contact, direction, and distance – especially with the driver.

The biggest mistakes made by golfers trying to make a wider backswing are that they SWAY away from the target leading to lost power, or they swing back too straight, sacrificing DISTANCE and DIRECTION due to an inefficient swing path.

The truth is you don’t need more WIDTH, you need more DEPTH to your swing. The very fact that we stand to the side of the golf ball and play with angled clubs demands that we swing the club and hands AROUND us and utilise the potential angular momentum available to us by swing on a tilted angle/plane. Think about how an NFL player would kick a field goal… they utilise the power of the arc.

More DEPTH will lead to increased power and greater accuracy with your driver than you ever thought possible. Just look at all the best players in the world and how they get the club head BEHIND them on the downswing and maximise their distance by swinging on the optimal arc. This angular momentum isn’t reserved solely for the best golfers on the planet, you can use it too if you learn to add more DEPTH to your golf swing.

This video includes a training station and drill you can do to ensure your practice time is as productive as possible and that you receive the appropriate feedback to make this change to your swing as quickly as possible.

  1. Rob, Long time "conventional" swinger of the golf club. Been tinkering with stack and tilt, and really feel it is the way to go. No certified Stack and Tilt instructors in my area. What is my best approach for online instruction? If I was back in Singapore, you'd be my choice, but sadly, that is not an option.

  2. Excellent video. At one time I tried the width swing. For me it was a dismal failure as my swing speed decreased significantly.

  3. Rob, I have been getting too steep and swinging out to in and hitting low left hooks, how do I get a video lesson? I am lost.

  4. Rob, I love your videos and explanations! What though, if you can’t get that deep behind you. Most of us amateur players are not as flexible as you are demonstrating. I struggle big time with the driver and have tried almost anything. The only way I can sort of deliver a fair driver shot is if I don’t go back further than horizontal. After that point, I can’t keep my arm straight anymore and the path of the club head in the downswing will change and the outcome will be unknown. What would you recommend and could you do a video on that?

  5. Another great video Rob! I have a hard time getting that much of a backswing with my body. Im very tall at 6ft6 and I’m built like a professional wrestler lol broad shoulders and smaller waist and big chest. So i have a tough time getting the club that deep behind me. Im going to try this with my S&T instructor tomorrow during our lesson. Cheers Rob!

  6. Guilty of this and never understanding why it turned to shite! Man it does one's head in not understanding why the ball goes no-where. So thanks for this.

  7. Today I learned something that's been killing my driver swing for the last year. Definitely gonna start swinging like this tomorrow at the range. Thank you!

  8. I don’t know why utube stopped recommending your video to me but it’s good to see you on my homepage again

  9. Is it me, the Flatter your swing with the Driver, the better the Coil or Spiral Up getting the Driver behind you…

  10. You are the best Rob!
I’ve started to hit far more toe shots lately, does that mean I’m coming inside too much?

  11. Great explanation, Rob! Trying to create more width/intentionally delaying wrist break had plagued my swing for decades (perhaps a misinterpretation of the Nicklaus one-piece takeaway). Depth, not width, is key!

  12. does this work only tor the driver or does hands in apply to all full shots?

  13. Hi Rob this is great as I’ve had a wide backswing with my driver for awhile now. Have a great shoulder turn but let the shaft extend to its furthest point. Went to the range tonight and tried keeping my head stationary and let my arms through unbelievable so thank you.

Can you teach me how to hit my 5wood cleanly. I’m super off the mat but dreadful on the course. Put a 7 wood in my hand and I’ll cream whatever shot is required. Strange game!

  14. Just discovered your content.
    Really glad. Subbed
Love the field kick angle of attack example. Your points harmonize with my own swing discoveries lately.
